Question:
Making Protein shakes with Orange Juice????

I found some protein drink receipes and a few of them use orange juice as the liquid. I know that orange juice has sugar in it, will it cause me to dump???    — lynnbrink (posted on March 16, 2006)

yes, oj is so potent that it is use to treat semi concious people in insulin shock prior to IV treatment, 6 oz will bring a 150lb person around in about 8 mins.

Remember everyone is different. Also, they make a "light" oj. Try a sip, see how it feels.

If you have to drink orange juice you should cut it in half with water. As for dumping, it depends on your body, however my surgeon limits us to 10 grams of sugar per meal. Good luck

I am able to drink all juice due to the fact it is natural sugar in the juice. I chose not too due to the fact it is high in calories and doesn't contribute anything other than liquid to my diet. My dietician stated that all juices are okay due to the natural sugar and not added sugar. But listen to YOUR surgeon and staff and YOUR body. We all tolerate different things.

Well, figure just ordinary Tropicana has 22g in 8 oz and you've almost got a SNickers bar there. The source of the sugar no longer matters to our bypassed selves, actually. We can and do dump on fruit sugars as easily as refined, and we CAN gain on good ol' healthy fruit and juice. As somone pointed out, OJ is metabolized so fast it can literally save a life. But that would not be US. We're trying to not dump (similar source of action--out of whack pancreas), but it can also put wt back on you. You can use diet pop (once blended it has no gas) or s/f Tang or anything in the Crystal Light family to get where you want to go. And there are proteins that are "born" orange creamsicle flavor and you simply add water.

Depends on person...OJ justs gives me heartburn so I avoid it these days. For my protein shakes I use Fruit2O flavors. They do have an orange one that is not bad.

I dump easily, but I don't with a few ounces of orange or apple juice. Try a little and see what happens.

I agree it is up to the individual. In the first couple of years post op, I would dump on anything more than 13g of sugar; however, I could drink a gallon of OJ and be fine. Still, 4+ years out, I can eat a piece of cake with frosting and be fine....but can't go anywhere near a small bowl of cereal. (I can drink milk fine, who knows what's up with the cereal. /shrug) Juice has loads of calories....as mentioned earlier, cut it in half with water.
