Question:
NEEDING INFO. ON BR. BARZUNE IN DALLAS
Wanting some info. on this doctor. I called his office and spoke briefly to his staff. I was told he takes out your gallbladder during surgery. Is this a common thing? Any help would be appreciated. THX! — MICHELLE F. (posted on September 16, 2003)

I don't know Dr. Barzune personally. He wasn't an option for me since he
isn't on any network plans and I had to have an in-netowrk surgeon. I have
heard very good things about him, though. I went to Dr. Kenneth Warnock in
Wichita Falls - who by the way, has a mortality rate of less than 1 in 1000
(which is excellent). Dr. Warnock does take out the gallbladder if the
patient is willing. He thinks it prevents you having to have another
surgery within the year as the rapid weight loss can cause gall stones.
And, frequently with morbidly obese patients, the gallbladder is diseased
anyway. I am glad that he took mine at the time of the RNY - that was one
less thing to worry about.

I had my surgery on 9/7/2001 by Dr. Barzune. It has changed my life. He
does take out all gallbladders if they are present. The gastric bypass
seems to make about 30% of patients have gallbladder attacks after surgery,
within the first year. You won't miss that gallbladder one bit. I do
agree it is the right choice. Saves another surgery. Dr. Barzune in my
opinion is the best in Dallas (but I know I am partial!) Good luck to you.
