Question:
Which kind of vitamins and what dose should you be taking post-op?
I wanted to get an idea of how many different vitamins I should be taking after my surgery. What does of calcium, what form of calcium, ect. Some one said 1500mg calcium, than another said 1500mg elemental calcium. Thats a big difference, between 3- 500mg pills and 5 pills of something that each pill has 300mg elemental calcium, but the label says 600mg calcium(but it only has 300mg elemental). Do you see why I am confused. Just let me know what you as post ops take daily. Thanks!!!! — [Anonymous] (posted on August 7, 2001)

Hi. First, I think the amount or type of vitamins depends on the patient
and/or doctor recommendations. My doctor has instructed me to take 1000 mg
of calcium (usually 4 Tums), 2 children's chewable multivitamins and 1 ml
of liquid B-complex each day. Hope this helps.

The calcium should be citrate with specific ratios of D & magnesium.
It can be taken in 500mg (elemental) increments, at least 1500mg per day.
Tums, Viactiv & other forms of carbonate or oyster shell will deliver
alcium to your blood, but you cannot count on it delivering to your BONES.
Citracal is an acceptable brand, Caltrate is NOT.
