Question:
I love pepper steak and rice from the chinese restaurant...Is this really fattening?
and will it slow my weight loss a lot? I know the sodium is high, but is it really fattening? A lot of times that is all I will eat for dinner...Any input is greatly appreciated.. — [Anonymous] (posted on July 25, 2001)

Go to the library and check out one of those books that gives you the
calorie and fat content in your favorite fast foods. Most of the chain
restaurants have nutrition guides but I don't think Chinese food
restaurants are required to have them. If it's too fattening, why not try
your own version at home? (unless you hate to cook :-)

Now is the time to get a book that gives you carb/protein/fat grams
as well as calories. You can have anything that doesn't make you sick
as long as you keep track of everything and don't over do the carbs.
Enjoy your pepper steak and rice.

I "think" the rice will be turned quickly to sugar and stored as
fat. But a dietician said to have protein with any carbs so that should'nt
happen. Seems if you eat the meat with it you will be alright. But in any
case you should be able to eat anything you like as long as it is'nt
overdone. That is don't eat to much! Example, I love Zeigles hot dogs but I
don't eat them often. Instead I eat the crappy no fat dogs with the idea I
will "occassionly" have my Zeigles. ;) Do the same with your
steak and rice. There is no harm in having something
"occassionly" that might not be a good choice often. (Your steak
and rice may not be a bad choice. I don't know for sure) But I for one am
NOT going to give up all the foods I love, however thanks to the surgery I
have the power to say NO! So eat all things in "moderation" and
enjoy life! Just be sensible most of the time.

Hi, I love Chinese food too. When I go I find that I gravitate towards the
various meats and just eat those (including pepper steak). I don't mess
with the rice other than an occasional bite because it is guaranteed to
make me sick. I can eat white rice but not fried rice. If this is
something you truly love then I say go for it but personally I'd
concentrate on getting in more of the steak than the rice for the protein.
I like to get a buffet to go and eat off of it several times. Chinese food
rules! Also, if you are worried about calories then you can always make
sure you make more sensible choices during the day if you know you're going
to have Chinese that night. Also, be sure to up your water to flush out
any bloat from extra sodium and MSG.
