Hi--My doctor has all of his patients on a protein only diet. It has worked very well for me, I am 5 1/2 months post-op and have lost 96.5 pounds. I usually eat cottage cheese (low fat) w/ splenda for breakfast, chopped meat and cheese (low fat) for lunch and some sort of meat for dinner. There really are many choices. I did experiment last month with adding in vegetables (before my doc said I could) and my weight loss went from an average of 16 pounds a month to 9.5. I have since went back to protein only and am back to losing about a pound a day. Every doctor has a different diet plan and you should check with yours before doing protein only. But it has worked for me. Good luck Priscilla Post-op 1/10/01 269-172.5 27.5 pounds to goal!!

Soy has protein. There are a lot of great soy products out there now. I love them. Any kind of bean has protein.

I have lost over 227 pounds in just 18 months post WLS and now below my goal weight.. Although I do center on PROTEIN, it's also very important, healthy and necessary to have some fat and carbs in our diets.. I try to keep my fat low in anything I cook with substitutes or trimming any excess fat and carbs below 25 a day.. Some days I do better than others.. Protein only is basically the Atkins Diet. I tried it and boy was it BORING!!! But the good thing about this surgery is that since you're focusing on protein first in the meal, you can fill up on protein before you even get to any carbs. Also, fruit and veggies don't have any protein, but are good low-cat and nutrient dense foods to have. If you delete the carb-heavy foods such as bread, pasta, rice, etc., then you can fill up on cheese, eggs, cottage cheese, veggies. But I sure would miss my low-fat crackers with my cheese! Good luck.

I would'nt do the Atkins diet. I used to do it and it is very high fat. I don't think you could eat fat without dumping at least not that much. And you have to take alot of vitamins with this diet. We take enough now! But I would suggest "The Carbohydrates Addict Diet". That was absolutely the best diet I was ever on. What you do is avoid carbs (2 grams or less is ok) for two meals. On the third meal you can eat anything you want! By having two meals without carbs it fools the body into thinking you won't have it for the third meal.... anyway it keeps the body from making excess insulin etc. I'm thinking very strongly of doing this diet again. But I'm hoping to find some meatless items such as Bocca burgers to cut down on fat. Anyway, don't do Atkins! If you are serious, buy the book "The Carbohydrate Addicts Diet". This is much more healthy. I should know as I have done both. Good luck, and please let me know if you try this and how it works out. Thanks.

I plan to have my LAP in Nov. however, I have met w/the doctor. His belief is that protein keeps you going so that you're not "wiped out" and helps you not sag as much until you can get into an exercise mode/program of your choice. He says "soft foods" do nothing for you healthwise. In 1 year he says I will be able to eat 1/2 sandwich for lunch and anything else I want as long as it's fits into a 1/4 cup. All doctors are different, but this is what mine recommends.

I TOTALLY DISAGREE WITH THE COMENTS ABOUT THE ADKINS PROTEIN. I AND NOT EVEN 2 MONTHS AND I HAVE LOST 60 POUNDS. AND I DRINK DR. ADKINS EVERY DAY. I DRINK THE VANILLA AND I MAKE THE DRINK VERY WATERY THIN. AND I FOUND THAT WHEN I DRINK MORE OF IT I LOSS MORE WEIGHT. SO I THINK WE ALL NEED TO FIND A DRINK THAT SUITS US AND NOT SCARE OTHERS INTO SOME THING THEY HAVEN'T TRIED..............THIS IS ONLY MY THOUGHTS ABOUT THE PROTEIN DRINK. AND YES I SOME TIME DON'T EAT FOR TWO OR THREE DAYS AND JUST DRINK THE PROTEIN DRINK ALL DAY. IT GIVE ME A FULL FEELING.

Kim, You did'nt read very carefully. We are not talking about the Atkins "DRINKS", but the diet that is high in fat ect. I don't know about the drinks, but if I can "scare" someone away from the diet then I'm all for it! We could tolerate the fat in the Atkins diet, AND the loss of many of the vitamins. But I don't understand how AFTER the surgery we could do it without dumping and other problems. Again, read! It's NOT the DRINKS, but the DIET. ;)

Hello....Vegetarian chili is an excellent source of protein as well as being low in fat. BUT...may I recommend that if you eat only protein that you drink tremendous amounts of water unless you want your kidneys to shut down. The surgery is supposed to promote BALANCE. Please don't hurt your body by obsessing about how to lose the weight in the quickest way.
