I am pre-op still, but a big Diet Coke fan!! My surgeon's office recommended that, once post-op, I could drink Gatorade diluted with water...not sure, I think the suger content may be of some concern. I'm trying to get ready for the ultimate loss of my DC by drinking Crystal Lite (it's like grown up Kool Aid). My favorite is Raspberry. It's not the same as Diet Coke, but it is pretty good. There are a number of flavors...

Following RNY, my surgeon allowed sugar-free tea, coffee, and Kool-Aid, Crystal-Lite, Gatorade, skim milk, bouillon or broth, and juices "in moderation and as tolerated". The Kool-Aid was too sweet for me, but the Crystal Lite was great and comes in several flavors. I made a variety of fruit smoothies with the skim milk, which was a good source of protein. Approximately 30% of post-ops develop some degree of lactose intolerance following WLS, so be alert to symptoms which include abdominal cramping and diarrhea after drinking milk. I do experience dumping with refined sugars, but the natural sugars in fruits and fruit juices never caused any problems for me. However, my surgeon discourages the regular and frequent intake of juices because of the added calories and lack of protein content. Good luck!

I forgot to say in my previous reply that my surgeon also allows any sugar-free carbonated beverages, but cautions that the carbonation may create some significant discomfort in the early weeks following RNY surgery. He suggested letting it sit out for awhile after opening it, and allowing it to go flat, but that really took all the joy out of a good Diet Coke! I waited until I was 2-3 months post-op before I tried them, and did just fine as long as I remembered to sip slowly. My daughter also had RNY and was drinking her Diet Cokes within 2 weeks of the surgery with no problems....slow and easy is the answer there. It was interesting however, that we both were completely "addicted" to Diet Coke pre-op, and post-op they just never really tasted the same or had the same appeal. Many RNY patients report that same experience with not only their carbonated beverages, but with lots of their "old" food favorites. Maybe you won't miss your Diet Coke as much as you think :-)

While still in the hospital, they gave me a Gatorade to provide electrolytes. Quite frankly, it made me dump. I looked at the can and was appalled by the sugar content. I don't know if they make diet gatorade, but this sure wasn't. Also questioned nutrionist, but she didn't seem to think it should be a problem. Nevertheless, I'll never get near another can of it. At home, I started alternating with water and Crystal Lite decaf iced tea, but find I really now prefer water 90% of the time. Crystal Lite also makes a nice pink lemonade, but for some reason, since surgery, I haven't had any urge to have it.

I drank a *lot* of Gatorade the first month out - diluted half or one third with water. The stronger flavors, like the new "Feirce" line (grape is my favorite) taste great even when very diluted. Alos, Kool-Aid made with Splenda (or other sugar sub) is good. Water tasted horrible, and still isn't great at 7 weeks out. I also like tea made with 4 decaf tea bags, 2 mint tea bags put in cold water in a 2 cup measuring cup nuked for 6-7 minutes. Let stand a minute or so, dump in 2-Q. pitcher and add sweetener (mint is sweet though) and ice water. Cheap, too. It tastes very different with the mint than regular tea - try it.

I'm 5 weeks post op and I too want something different at times.I do drink Gatorade at times if I feel sluggish. I don't dump since I had an open BPD/DS so I'm not sure how you'll do with that. However, I drink Sugar Free Tang, only 5 calories per serving(8oz I think),Country Time Lem'n Berry Sippers is sugar free and the strawberry Lemonade is nice. Again, 5 calories per serving and the Sugar Free Koolade. I also make frozen pops from these as a nice change. Also, add a lemon to the water for a different taste. Best wishes and continued success.

Gatorade does make another drink that would be fine for you to have. It's called Propel(fitness water). This is a great drink for those that don't like nutrasweetened drinks. It does have sugar, but a very slight amount, 2g. It comes in many flavors, my fav is black cherry.

Hi! I am Pre-op but I, and others, have ordered shaved ice machines. You can order sugar-free flavors and to me it seems like it would be the perfect way to cure a sweet tooth. Expecially because you can get such a variety of flavors. I got mine from www.hawaiianshavedice.com.

ORANGE GATORADE has been my saviour! I add about 4 oz to my 20oz water bottle! I love it! No problems with the sugar for me!
