Question:
How do post-ops tolerate fruits?
Also, do sugar alcohols have the same effect as sugar does (i.e. dumping)? Any input would be appreciated. Thank you. — Rene` B. (posted on March 6, 2001)

I'm 11 months out & have no problem whatsoever with fruit. I do usually
remove the skin, tho & if a bite is not breaking down well enough, I
remove it, for example the little membranous part of an orange. But anytime
I have a bit of a bite that won't break down all the way, I remove it. I
have no problem with the sugar, but then I don't dump, never have, so my
experience may be different than someone else's.

I had a lap RNY 11 months ago. My surgeon starts his patients on a
"soft" diet at 3 weeks post-op, and advances them to a regular
diet at 6 weeks. On the soft diet, I ate seedless grapes, peeled plums,
peaches & nectarines, and bananas; sugar-free canned peaches, mandarin
oranges & fruit cocktail (picked out the pineapple because it was too
fibrous). At 6 weeks, I added peeled apples and ate oranges with the
membrane removed. I stopped peeling my fruit at about 3 months post-op,
and also added fresh pineapple to my diet without any problems (but DO chew
well). I do experience dumping with refined sugars, but the natural sugars
in fruits have never bothered me. This was my experience, but please
consult your surgeon and follow his recommended regimen for best results
with your particular surgery.

I had an open RNY and am a little more than 2 months post-op. I can eat
all fruits I've tried with no problems and have no problems with sugar
alcohols.

I add banana and either fresh strawberries or blueberries to my protein
shake and it tastes great! I tolerate it as well! I've also tried canatlope
and watermelon. Peaches are next!
