Question:
Does anyone else have a problem with vegetables?

I have another question. I am one year post op and still having a problem with vegetables. My family gets very upset whenever I crave salads or vegetables because they dread the after effects when I eat them. I have learned my lesson this week and I probably won't be eating them for quite some time. Last Friday I was craving salad so I made a very small one and it enjoyed it tremendously, however, the after effects were terrible. I still get terrible gas, cramps and dumping. Monday (like an idiot) I ate a few bites of zuchinni. My husband and daughter swore that they were going to start wearing gas masks around the house if I didn't stop eating vegetables. Does anyone else have this problem? My surgeon said that I should be able to eat them now, and that I only needed to watch the intake for the first 6 months after surgery. But now after one year I should be able to eat them with no problem. HELP!!!! Linda Forrester [email protected]    — Linda F. (posted on September 7, 2000)

Hi Linda .... It took me two years before I was able to eat a salad. I could not tolerate it at all. Good Luck Mary Anne

I love a good salad and long for the days when I could eat a huge Greek salad at one of my favorite lunch spots. I don't have gas problems, but I can't eat much salad because it makes me so full. Salad made me feel full before WLS, so it's even more so now. I also find that I cannot always tolerate raw vegies with the skin on. Hang in there. There are worse things that could happen besides never being able to eat salad again!

I have a friend who put it well. "I can still have broccoli, but it can just never be the main course." I also love vggies and thought I'd explode trying to get'em in that first year. You can add Beano to the first few bites, take 2 activated charcoal before you eat it (but never with any vites or meds), and chase it with simethicone. A lot of trouble? Yes, but better than facing a greenless life, huh? I do it with thing I KNOW will backfire on me. Chili and a really good salad are two of 'em.
