Question:
I need to live on protein shakes for about two weeks now.

I would like to make my own with protein powder, nonfat milk or water, ice, fruit, etc. By using a blender will the added bubbles placed in the drink (which makes it frothy) cause any undue pain in my pouch/intestines? I am very concerned because I have acquired gas very bad after eating certain foods, and I thought I was going to die for about 45 minutes. I will need to do this for about 2 weeks, so I need your input ASAP. Thanks friends. Missy (268/125 RNY).    — Missy H. (posted on August 31, 2005)

I made my drinks and such in my blender and didn't have a problem. Sip the drink slow and see if this is any help. God Bless. Lap-RNY 6/16/05 292/230

What are you using for protein powder? You could have become lactose intolerant. Some protein powders do not use pure whey isolate, they use concentrate which has fillers of lactose. Plus if you are using milk, whether it be no fat or not, that would/could add to the gas. There could always be the sugar factor also. Are you using any new fruits? Good luck! Theresa :)

I have never been a breakfast eater so I use a protein shake for breakfast and have for over a year post op now I use designer whey I can get it at my local grocery or health food store it is very affordable. It has 18 grams of protein per scoop and 100 calories I mix it with carb countdown fat free dairy beverage 45 calories 8 grms protein per 8 ounces so I will sometimes use 12 ounces. I like the chocolate and the french vanilla is very good for mixing with fruit I freeze bananas, frozen strawberries, peaches, blueberries its great and as far as being frothy I take a few ice cubes and stir them around some to get the frothy down first. Hope this helps...Nancy

When I was mixing up formula for my baby, it would become very foamy. Since she was so gassy to begin with, I bought Little Tummies (it's a liquid simethicone for babies). As soon as I put a few drops into the formula, all the bubbles broke up! Try that and good luck! Carmen

I do one to two shakes a day, and it depends on what you mix in it. If your blender drinks have frothy bubbles at the top, let it sit for a few minutes, then spoon the bubbles off. I get less froth when I use my Tupperware shaker cup. You'll do fine! :o) Hugs, ~christi speck RNY 10-27-04

hi missy, make your shakes as usual but let them sit for a minute and then tap the container to break some of the bubbles up. also do not blend the mixture as much, just enough to blend all the ingredients. hope this helps rny 288/187-1/4/05

Hey Missy, I don't know about the bubbles which you speak of, but maybe if you are lactose intolerant you can try 'Lactaid' milk which can be bought at any supermarket, which I believe comes in nonfat, 1%, 2% and whole milk and tastes the same as regular milk. I sure hope this helps. Good Luck! Shahidah

Hi Missy. I use a mixer I got from Pampered Chef to mix that kind of stuff. I dont like bubbles in my drinks either. Its called "Measure, Mix and Pour". It has a plunger type mixer. If you would like to see what one looks like you can email me at [email protected] I can direct you from there. Billie Jo

Missy, I love the shakes. Invest in one of the "Bullet Blenders". They are available at most any Walgreens or "as seen on TV" stores. I ordered mine from eBay and spent roughly 60 bucks including shipping. Its the only way to get a really good mix on a protein shake. I have tried them all. Blenders, shakers, whisks. You name it, I've tried it. You can put in a small amount of ice and 8oz of skim milk with a scoop of protein and you will think you just stopped off at the local Smoothie King. This is the best way to mix a protein shake hands down. Hope this helps ya.

I take about 6 protein shakes per day. I use protein powder, water, a bit of ice for a low calorie, low sugar (mine is 0g sugar) 30g of protein. A regular blender also made it too frothy for me, so I used a hand blender for 10 yrs and have been using my Magic Bullet for 1.5 yrs. Either one blends well without doubling the size of the drink by making it full of air. I also make some drinks with just powder and water and shake. I do not use milk or fruit in my drinks, no extra calories or sugars for me.
