Question:
How do I stop the weight loss

I had an open RNY on 7/11/03 with an starting weight of 234 at 5'5". I was happy when I got under 200, floored when I hit 170 and thought "wow" at 140. Now at almost 16 mos postop I'm down to 125lb (occassionally up to 129 with water retention). No matter how much I eat, I can't seem to gain and maintain my weight. I'm trying to get back to 135-140lbs. I tried Boost/ensure, but it upsets my stomach and washes straight thru. I do keep a food diary now and believe I am getting in a good amount of protein and WAY TO MUCH carbs and sweets. So where am I blowing this?    — tigerpaws (posted on October 28, 2004)

I lost more weight than my doc wanted me to also. he had me start eating more high calorie and high carb snacks and start drinking with my meals. i did gain seven pounds but it fell right back off so I don't know the answer. I know I am nearly two years out and can eat a lot more food. for instance, today, i ate an entire turkey sandwhich. Turkey, mayo and two slices of bread. Sometimes, i can't eat but half a sandwhich tho.

Please don't take this the wrong way but I checked your profile and there is nothing there about how much exercise you're doing, how much protein, etc. I've read a lot on this site of people who thought they were losing too much and added back the carbs and then had a real boomerang effect. Boost/ensure is loaded with sugar if it's still the same formulation they had a couple of years ago so that doesn't sound like a good choice to me. Are you exercising vigorously everyday? It might be better to cut back on that some rather than adding the carbs. Are you keeping track of the calories in? You might just not be getting enough calories.

Since your BMI is still in the middle of the "normal" range I would say not to worry about it. I certainly wouldn't up the carbs or sugar. I have found that I will maintain if I have an extra protein shake. You might want to try that. Good luck!

I agree with the last poster. Your BMI is neither high or low. I would not mess around with adding carbs, sugary stuff etc. Perhaps try toning up and adding muscle.

I was wondering you said Boost/ensure washes right thru you..Does a lot of foods do that? I was having trouble for a couple months with everything going right thru me and found out I needed more Fiber to bulk up..just an idea. Maybe you're getting rid of too much.

Well, if it's any comfort, I sorta had your problem until I hit the 18-month post-op mark. Cruised for one more month, and then found I could actually *gain*. Up til then, I overshot goal by 20 lbs, ate 2,000 calories a day (including protein shakes), and yes, got away with sugar. I also was regularly running at the time, though.<P>If you are like me (who knows who you're like, lol), I predict you will stabilize somewhere between 18-24 months post-op. Personally, I don't counsel "reversing the pouch rules" (good luck retraining yourself when the inevitable weight gain follows that strategy down the road). I also don't recommend eating a lot of sugar, though I did that (I'm not a dumper, never was), 'cause sure enough, the day came when I found I had a tiger by the tail and was fighting undesired weight gain. Try to eat more calories, but healthy ones. Eat several small meals a day (if you're not doing that already). Nuts are a good source of healthy calories for someone in your situation. Most of all, just realize that 12-18 months from now, you maybe looking back with wonder on this period of time you're in now. That was *my* honeymoon with WLS -- but it didn't last, and I'm told it rarely ever does.

Wow....Our beginning stats are very close. I am 38yrs old, when I started this journey I weighed in at 231 lbs, I'm 5'4" tall. I'm 18mos. post and weigh 150lbs. I wanted to slow my weight down (and I've been successful) because I lost past the size I wanted to be. I am in a very comfortable size 6 now. (More comfortable than they were a month ago...in fact, they're on their way to loose.) I don't want to be a size 4. (Cant believe I'm saying this.) I was a size 20 when this started. I'm im pretty good shape, not too flabby. i look good. I am however starting to become concerned about my continued weight loss. I dont try to overeat really, but I do allow myself more indulgences than I used to. Not much though, sugar STILL makes me dump. Also, I can't do anything with too much fat/grease,...I get sick right away. Just the thought of McDonalds would make me sick. When you figure it out...let me know. Good Luck!

Thanks for the input. I'm sorry, I never take time to update my profile. I do exercise about twice a week, weights mostly. Protein shakes as well as the Boost/ensure drinks go straight thru me and leaving me feelilng yucky for a while. Currently I'm getting about 2000 calories a day, sometimes more and I often snack on popcorn or dry cereal thru out the day. I know I'm not suppose to, but these are my biggest sins to deal with on a daily basis (hey, I guess everyone has to have one). I'm also in a size 4 and often have to shop in the Juniors for pants. I'm hoping a little weight gain might bring my breast back - I do miss the "girls". Thanks everyone for the input!

Our stats are about the same. I am 5ft 6 and started at 255. Now 32 months post op I am 124.5 wearing 2/4. I eat a lot but can't handle grease, too much sugar. Like the other poster..today I could only eat 1/2 hambuger, yesterday a whole one. it varies.
