Question:
Anyone start drinking Diet Coke again after surgery?
I am almost 1 year post op and my diet coke cravings have returned with a vengence. Have any of you started to drink again after surgery? Did it stop your weightloss? Cause weight gain? Any input is appreciated. — Cami K. (posted on March 10, 2004)

I drink it sometimes, about 2x a week. I don't think it'll stop a weight
loss. BUt I think when I am drinking it I am not following the plan as
closely so that I tend to have a slower week.

I can't start my day without a diet coke, pepsi or dr.pepper!!! I started
drinking pop soon after(about 2mo post-op), but back then I did shake it up
first to make it flat (yucky, I love the fizz), now I just drink it. It has
not slowed me down in weight loss or caused any weight gain. Enjoy :o)

I was also a DC junkie before surgery. I quit a couple of weeks before
surgery so that I didn't have to fight caffeine withdrawal. I'm 10 months
post-op and still do not drink soda or anything else with caffeine. My
only statement is caution about the aspartame. Once you start reading
about the scary effects, you may want to reconsider drinking/eating any of
that stuff. Just a thought. Good luck to you!

I drink pop occaisionally. Diet should not slow weight loss, but I
understand that diet pop leaches calcium form our bones, something we
surely do not need after this surgery. Again i drink it only
occaisionally. I try to focus more on water and drinks with more
nourishment in them.

I don't think it will stop your weight loss, either, but if it doesn't make
you feel weird, go for it. Just be aware, as a previous poster said, that
the phosporic acid will leach calcium from your bones & teeth. But,
I'm a believer in anything in moderation. There is 1 other thing, though,
for me, soda is a trigger food...it makes me crave junk food when I drink
it. Obviously, YMMV.

I've been drinking it since month 2 post-op. I'm almost 2 1/2 years out
and it never hurt my weightloss and I haven't regained any weight.

I had my first diet Coke at about 8 months post op. I used to be a diet
Coke-aholic. However, I tried Diet Vanilla Pepsi, and now I am hooked on
that - but only about 2-3 times a week. And I really like thsoe little 8
oz. cans. They may be more expensive but they are just the right size for
me! I don't think this has affected my weight loss or invoked any cravings.

I started drinking Diet Coke about 18 months out. I think it has actually
helped the weight loss since it makes me full. I have tried to limit myself
to 1/day, but sometimes I have 2. (I'm out 22 months now - down 141 lbs,
size 6-8.) Good luck!

Of you that started redrinking DC what does your surgeon say about it? Do
they say it's okay?

My surgeon released me to drink Diet- caffiene free at 8 months. He says
drink all you want, I do, I drink it every day but now listen if I drink
caffeinated, I eat, caffiene free doesn't change anything. Ask your surgeon
first. All surgeons are different, some say go for it while others asy no
way. I have continued to lose weight and haven't regained any. Best of luck
to you.....

I started about 3-months post-op. I had to dilute it with a lot of water
though. After about 6-months I could occationally drink one without
diluting it. Now at one year today (March 11th) to be exact, I still have
to dilute my diet cokes with water.

Yes, I did start drinking Diet Coke about 16 months out of surgery and
currently am addicted. It didn't slow my weight loss but I think it has
contributed to a regain. I like it with my meals which we all know is a
no-no so I believe it washes food through and I eat much more than if I
didn't drink with meals. I will be 4 years out at the end of this month.
I hope it helps.

Diet Coke is ok. I prefer Diet Dr Pepper. My surgeon said pop is fine as
long as it's DIET. It doesn't have any calories. There have been no
studies to PROVE or DISPROVE that carbonation affects the pouch. I am over
2 years post op and have been drinking pop for about 1 1/2 years of that.
I have had NO weight gain. If there's no calories, WHY would I gain
weight? I've maintained my weight loss for over a year and a half. Still
size 4.

I'm 10 years post op. Been drinking diet coke (caffiene free since having
kids)since about 1 year out. Initially, would open the cans and let some
of the fizz settle before drinking. Now, doesn't seem to be a problem. My
surgeon was OK with it as long as it was diet. His biggest complaint with
soda is the calorie load.

My surgeon says Diet Coke is not the best thing for the staples in the
pouch ( It has to do with carbon dioxide and phosphoric acid)I also saw an
endocrinologist (on Fox News) who said, that aspartame(nutra sweet)has the
characteristic of being an upper type drug- which causes 2 addictive type
behaviors 1)to want more of the addictive product , the 2) is to crave
carbs which can cause an increase in weight.
