Question:
abdominoplasty/love handles??
Can someone please tell me if an abdominoplasty will take away the love handles that I have around my back area? I hate it and am very self-conscious about the fat around my back. I'm hopeful that a TT will pull that fat around and get rid of it - or am I mistaken?! Thanks! — Mary W. (posted on January 2, 2004)

I don't believe that the abdominoplasty will do this. Look into the lower
belt lipectomy or lower body lift. Same procedure, different name. I am
hoping to have it done to correct some of the same problems. The results I
have seen are amazing.

Abdominoplasty only handles the excess skin/flab in the front and the
abdominal muscles are tightened. A full belt lipectomy does the love
handles and a lower body lift. I had it all done at the same time on
December 22nd. While I must say I am still in lots of pain - compared to
the LAP-RNY this is really major, the results are astonishing. I am still
very swollen but I know the end will justify it all. If you need more
information, please feel free to email at [email protected].

I had a belt lipectomy done on Dec. 19. I went to two different surgeons,
and the first was only going to do the abdominoplasty, then in another
surgery address the fat in my hips and back. He told me that I would have
"dog ears" after the first surgery.
The second surgeon I went to suggested the belt lipectomy, which addresses
the hips AND the fat in back, as well as the full abdominoplasty. I went
with this surgeon. I'm very glad, too. He took off 5 pounds in the front,
and three pounds from the side and back, for a total of 8 pounds. For some
inexcusable reason, I failed to take my measurements before surgery, so I
don't know what this equates to in inches. But I can tell you it's a major
difference! I would definitely go with the lower body lift.

What are dog ears? I am having panniculectomy on 1/26 and I guess I will
have a fat back still since insurance would only approve panniculectomy.
Surgeon told me he wouldn't be tightening the muscles because of the pull
it would have on the hernia repair I am having too. Anyone body else have
this reasoning for not tightening the muscles just the panni?

My PS told me that he would not recommend a abdiminosplasty due to previous
weakening of the muscle due to the hernia...so I had a panniculectomy- I am
totally thrilled with the results. I have photos on my yahoo web
page-accessible thru my profile.

A standard tummy tuck incision stops at the hips, along where a bikini
would go. Where the incision stops, the skin cannot be puleld much or
tightened. As such, a standard tummy tuck DOES NOT address excess skin and
fat on the back or "love handle" area. The result will be
"dog ears" or little loose flaps of skin. An extended tummy
tuck, lower body lift, and liposuction are procedures that help get the
waist, back, and thighs to also look good
