Question:
Are Oranges...

Are oranges ok to eat. I can pretty much eat all fruits, haven't tried oranges or grapefruit, and I love them both.    — noweapon (posted on November 24, 2003)

I don't know how far post-op you are, but you need to be careful of citrus fruits for a few reasons. First, oranges and tangerines tend to be high in fructose, which could make you dump. Secondly, the membranes around the sections of citrus fruits are indigestible, and too many of them could clog your stoma. My surgeon suggested making orange supremes (where you cut the flesh between the membranes to avoid the indigestible part, like you do with grapefruit). Citrus fruits also tend to be high in acid which can iritate the new plumbing connections, and possibly contribute to an ulcer. I was discouraged from trying any citrus for at least three months after surgery.

With each new food, you must try it to see how your pouch likes it. The citrus fruits are acidy and some pouches do not react well to the acid, however, there are tons of post-ops who drink OJ, eat oranges (I prefer the clementines this time of year) and grapefruits with no problems. If you are a new post-op, 0-6 weeks out, ask your surgeon first.

The others addressed acid & texture, so I'll address sugar. Although occasional fruit is ok, it IS sugar, Being natural will not prevent it messing with our wt loss. I had a mad affair with fruit that cost me at least 8#. So, part of an orange here or there, not bad. 2-3 per day, that could be very bad.
