Question:
How long after WLS can I resume my paxil?
I am having WLS on Dec. 5th, and I take twenty mg. of paxil in the evening. How many days will I be without it in the hospital? Will I notice the lack of it in my system or does it take longer than a few days for your body to realize that you aren't taking it? — natalie J. I insisted in getting back on my depression meds the day after surgery. I
was not going to screw up somthing that was totally under control. I had a
g-tube so it was no problem. However, when I went home I started taking it
by mouth right away. Paxil is small like Celexa and you should be fine.
Break in 1/2 and then it will be even smaller. Paxil may come in liquid
form which you could use for a while. Be off of it as short a time as
possible is my advice. Just make it clear to the surgeon that you are
concerned about this and need to get back on.

HELLO, I TOO TAKE PAXIL, 20 MG. AND HAVE SINCE 94' I DIDNT TAKE MINE FOR A
FEW WEEKS CAUSE MY DOC SAID I COULDNT TAKE PILLS AND I WAS TOLD THAT IT
WOULDNT DESOLVE. I WAS ALSO TOLD IT DIDNT COME IN LIQUID, WHICH IT DOES,
ANYWAY I PUT MY PAXIL IN ABOUT A TABLESPOON OF TAP WATER AND WITHIN 3
MINUTES IT DESOLVED, SO SINCE THEN IVE BEEN TAKING IT, AND I WOULD OF
SOONER IF I HAD KNOWN ABOUT THIS. I COULD TELL I NEEDED IT, TRUST ME YOU
DONT WANT TO GET DEPRESSED AFTER WLS, I DID, SO I TAKE IT EVERYDAY NOW AND
FEEL GREAT!! GOOD LUCK. WALGREEN'S IS THE PHARMACY THAT TOLD ME IT DOES
COME IN LIQUID AND THEY CAN GET IT IF YOU PREFER. I JUST DIDNT LIKE THE
TASTE OF THE LIQUID. SHELLY

I take Luvox for O.C.D. and I started taking my meds the day after surgery,
while I was still in the hospital. I brought them with me just in case it
would be a real hassle to get them from the nurses so I just took them
myself without asking (I was already on oral pain meds so I didn't think it
was going to hurt anything). I haven't had a problem taking my meds since
then. I am 6 weeks out and done 30 pounds so far. Good luck and God bless
you.

Ask your doctor what he would like you to do if you are not sure, I have
been on anti-depressants for years and I didn't take mine while I was in
the hospital but as soon as I came home I took mine. I am on the generic
version and it dissolves fairly quick so I would say go ahead and take it
when you can!
GOOD LUCK!

My PCP told me you can't just stop Paxil you have to taper off gradually or
else the depression or anxiety hits big time. If they have liquid form I
would use that in the hospital and afterward. Stress to your surgeon that
you don't want to be off your meds, I'm sure he will comply.

My surgeon told me to resume my antidepressant (Effexor) the day I got home
from the hospital. I don't know how long Paxil stays in your system. I'd
ask your surgeon what he recommends.
