Question:
Anyone crave salt post-op?
I have sabotaged my weightloss two times now, one with a dill pickle and another with olives. I love both but the last time I gained 5 lbs. on the olives. Also acquired a little UTI in the process. Getting rid of all the pickles in the house! — Rhonda B. (posted on October 27, 2003)

Hi Rhonda, I am now 9 mths post op and I use to not eat hardly anything
with salt on it, but now since I had the surgery, I crave it but only
sometimes. I try to watch though what I eat with the salty things! But, yes
I do crave it too so you are not alone! Good Luck to you!

Oh my lord YES!!! It has almost been 3 years for me and I remember those
first few months of salt cravings. I ate a few green olives every day. I
craved them so bad!!!! I started to put two and two together and realized
that when I was craving something salty it was like my body's way of
telling me that I am dehydrated and that I needed water. After a while
when I got those cravings I drank a LOT of water and if I still craved
some, I ate one or two. The 5 pounds you gained was water weight. When we
are dehydrated and eat something salty, your body holds on to every last
bit of water it can, making us bloated. I know it sounds opposite but the
best way to get rid of water bloating is to drink more water. I still eat
my occasional olive though. They are just too good! Don't beat yourself up
over this. Just realize that you are needing more fluids. Have your
occasional olive or pickle!

How soon can you get your 'lytes (potassium) tested? I don't think you
sabotaged your wt loss with salt lbs. Are you drinking a ton of water, as
well?

I went thru horrible salt cravings. Turns out I was anemic and needed to
take supplements 3 times per day. Tell your doctor and have your bloodwork
checked.

Im a salt nut! I still eat lots of salt, but I try to stick to the light
salt. I eat chips, peanuts, olives and all the other good fattening foods.
I have not gained any weight, but I keep losing and gaining the same 4lbs
over and over. Good luck!

Oh my gosh! I swear I was just going to post this question ... but I read
yours first!!! I have had an unbelievable craving for salt!! I started
eating pretzels (I suck the salt off first) ... and my nutritionist said to
try dill pickles ... I ate a whole jar in two days! I want to put salt
around the rim of my glass when I have a V8 ... I wanted to put salt in my
cottage cheese! I've become a salt-junkie. Is this just a phase?

I'm personally considering having a salt lick installed on my kitchen
table! I've had this craving since day one! Thank goodness my
transgressions with a can of spanish olives didn't cause me any weight
gain. I was told to double my water intake to negate the effects of the
extra salt. Good luck to you!

You know, I often crave avacados...and I thought that was weird, but after
thinking about it, I decided it was because I tend to drown them in salt -
do that to cukes too and I crave those also. So yeah, I think that I crave
salt - not daily but often enough.
