Question:
OK- Cal. Citrate is THE way to go but- HELP!

I am finally getting the fact that I need calcium citrate. OK, I'm on board now. BUT, help! I went to the vitamin shop yesterday and got so annoyed. I CAN NOT take 4, 5, 6 pills a day- that's just silly, plus I can't swallow those big things, I gag. I can't find a chewable that has a decent dose of citrate in it. I picked up a liquid that has 1000mg per ounce, so that means I need to take 1 1/2 oz per day- not a problem, but the price is! 10 oz cost me 12 dollars! So- I really need advice of ACTUAL products that you guys are taking and where I can find them- (please, name names). I've wasted a year by taking carbonate, so I feel an urgency to get this on track right away! Thanks in advance for your assistance!    — LMCLILLY (posted on October 14, 2003)

Twinlabs akes a chewable calcium citirate wafer that I used in the beginning. They taste kind of like big sweet tarts. I switched to capsules once I got where I could take pills easily. I never could take the Citracal without throwing up. Hope this helps.

I take Bariatric Advantage... you can get them from bariatric advantage direct or wlssupplies.com has them too. I like the chocolate flavor better than the mint.

I take the twinlabs. Check out the prices at vitacost.com. Also Vitamin shoppe has them for a little more. I take two in the am and two in the evening. I have a feeling I should take two more, but will wait to hear from my nutritionist. Lynda ME/FL

Well, what I do is use regular Citrical + D and let it sit in about 8 ounces of water. After a few minutes both of my pills disolve and I drink them. I have 2 a day which equals 1260 mg of calcium citrate. The only thing is that it's still gritty when you get to the bottom but it's bearable. I look at it this way...I need to do it and I am also getting in some of my water with it too. I've tried Twin Lab capsules and they wouldn't disolve in amything. Not to be too disgusting but after I opened them and put them on something and ate it I would burp powder...not very attractive. The Citracal has been do-able for me. Good luck.

Somebody PLEASE tell me if I'm wrong, but I crush mine and mix it with NS applesauce or yogurt. There is no bad taste, it's just a little chalky. I've even put it in my protein drink. It does not say to not crush - it isn't time released. Again - if this isn't something I should be doing - someone please let me know.

Hi Pamela, I do the same thing. Crush and add it to some foods.

Lisa, I'm a convert also! LOL I do take the calcium citrate + D. HUGE darn things! I take two in the morning spacing them out a few mintes and then two at night spacing them out also. I also take a Centrum Silver two times a day with those HUGE calcium citrates. Things are fine once they make their way through the esophogus. I just heard about the Bariatric Advantage chocolate waffers. My sister uses those and says they are very pleasant. Maybe next time I will try those.

I take a product called UpCal D from vitalady.com. It is calcium citrate and vitamin D. It is a very fine powder (much finer than emptying out a capsule) and has no taste. I usually throw it in with my protein drink or mix it with 2 oz of flavored water. I have also tried the capsules which contain calcium citrate, magnesium, and vitamin D. While the powder inside the capsules is grainier than that of the UpCal D, it is still better than trying to swallow those horse pills.

I take the calcium citrate from vitalady. It comes in a smaller gelatin (I guess you call it) capsule. Not the big chalky huge things. They go down just fine for me. If you can take a regular sized capsule, these should be OK.

You can find chewable 500mg calcium citrate at puritanspride.com. They are very reasonable priced I think they were 3 bottles for $13.00 and have a vanilla flavor to them.

I take a liquid calcium called KAL Cal Mag+. It has 600 mg. per tbsp. I take 3 tbsp a day. It is orange flavored and I mix it with sf Tang and can't taste it at all! I actually enjoy taking it. I have been ordering it from vitaminshoppe.com, but have also found it in my local health food store. Hope this helps

To the post from Kristen, I just went to the puritanspride.com web site and the chewable that they have is calcium carbonate, not citrate. They said it had a bavarian cream flavor, so I am assuming this is the one that you are mentioning. Double check your label to make sure you are getting the right type of calcium. I am mentioning this because we are all here to help each other and look out for each other. I too have been looking for a decently priced calcium citrate that is chewable with a higher calcium content than Twinlab(250mg per wafer)....so far, no luck. Please let me know if anyone finds one. Thanks

Just got back from my support group. The program coordinator (a nurse) just happened to mention that "Citracal" brand calcium citrate can be dissolved in water and taken that way. She said to just use enough water to cover in small container (a shot glass or medicine cup are ideal). I've been using Citracal and my last labs were right on track. Good Luck to you!

To the poster who said she is getting 1250 a day from 2 Citracal? That would be FOUR a day. They are 315 mg each. I know, I was fooled by serving size, too. What a shocker. Was talking half as much and that was AFTER my dx with osteoporosis. Please always read the serving size carefully on any supplement OR food you eat. Sometimes a small container is actually 2-3 servings and the sugars/calories in it might actually be WAY more than you think. Same with mg or g of supplements. We have to think exactly what the mfr meant when they printed the label. And yes, I am still fooled by this every now & then.

Michelle, I drink 4 pills each day for a total of 1230 mg. I do 2 pills in te morning and 2 in the afternoon to give me time before I take my iron with dinner...cuz I know that the calcium blocks absorption of the iron. Lol, I got it under control :D

I used to get all my Ca Citrate from WalMart. It is very cheap there. Now I go to Sam's Club, theirs' is very inexpensive also. When I first had the surgery, I put my ca citrate in a small amt of water & they melted right away and I drank them. I refuse to go to these high priced places for something I can get very inexpensively. Also, I can drink milk & like it so I drink a quart of skin milk 4-6 days a week on top of the ca citrate. Good Luck in your decison. karen
