Question:
Feel like I'm eating to much after EGD.

I had an EGD performed last month and it seems like I am now able to eat to much. At 3 mths post-op I ate this morning: 1 cup oatmeal, 1 egg white, and 2 sausage links. I'm not sure if I should still be eating the 4 tbsps or when do you increase amount to 6 ozs. I just hope my stretched stoma doesn't hinder my weightloss progress. — Starrlina (posted on August 21, 2003)

I have had two dilations done now and I too feel as if I can eat too much. I'm really not sure about whether that is too much food because I'm not real sure myself how much I am able to eat, but I do know that after my EGD I felt like I could eat much more food and had that same concern. I am, however; happy to say that at just 5 months post-op I am down 100lbs and have gone from a BMI of 44 to a BMI of 27.8 so I must be doing something right(or my surgeon did)anyway. I do know that I can eat over a cup of food at one time such as chili so I'm pretty sure you are doing just fine. Good luck!

Well, I know we're all different, and how much is too much is a question that will have a different answer for everyone. However, I'm about 4 1/2 months out (about a month and a half ahead of you), and I cannot eat nearly that much at a sitting. I could eat either the 1/2 cup of oatmeal with a tablespoon or two or skim milk, OR the egg white and ONE sausage, but not all of it. Remember, just because you can fit it all, doesn't mean you should eat it all. Try tracking your food intake on fitday.com (free) and see how many calories you're taking in during the day (my dietitian wants me to average no more than 1200 a day, I actually average about 900), and what your balance of protein and carbs is (keep the protein ahead of the carbs). That will give you a good indication as to whether you're eating too much or not. And, check with your dietitian or your doc if you're still concerned.

Here's my first comment! Oatmeal is pretty soft is total carbs and should either not be eaten or in a very small quantity. Your ratio of protien to carbs is way out of proportion. If you were eating the majority of your food as protein, such as the egg white then it would stay in your pouch, make you feel full sooner and be so much better for you.
If I was going to eat a meal with the same ingredients mine would be: 2 egg whites, 1 sausage link, 1/8 cup of oatmeal. This would put you at about 3/4 protein and 1/3 carbs. I would cut the sausage link to one and increase the eggs to 2 because of the amount of fat in the sausage.
Also, normally you slowly increase quantity. From 4 to 6 to 8 tblspns, which would put you at 4 ounces. At 3 months I was eating 3-4 ounces and at 6-1/2 months I eat 3-6 with 4-5 being the norm. I can't imagine your surgeon dilated the stoma very much. I'm guessing it's the foods you are choosing and the order you are eating them. Send the protein down first so it can stop the rest of the foods and make you full.

I had this same worry. After they dialated my stricture, I thought my surgery was ruined for sure as I could eat so much more and also got hungry more frequently. I called my surgeon, they checked the records and confirmed that it had only been dialated to x amount of centimeters and I would be fine. I did proceed to lose 150 pounds so I guess they were right. I know how you feel though!

Just my opinion here, but the cup of oatmeal is too much. I think the eggs and sausage should be enough, but I'm only 4 weeks postop so just eating the whole egg seems like a lot to me.

Hmm how runny are you making the oatmeal to be able to eat a whole cup AND eggs with sausage? That's a lot to me. Maybe increase the amount of egg you eat and thicken up the oatmeal - if you need it - so that less of it is satisfying?
