Question:
2 Weeks Post Op- Water Tastes Horrible!
I'm 2 weeks post op today and am having the hardest time drinking my water. I'm not even getting in my 48 oz a day and don't want to get dehydrated. I've tried it really cold and also at room temp. with no luck! Not only does it not taste good, it makes my pouch kinda uncomfortable, almost sore. I asked my Doc and he has no idea but has heard this from many of his other patients. I'm not taking big sips and don't use a straw. Has anyone had this problem and does it change? I drank water all the time prior to surgery and loved it, Dasani being my favorite. Help! — Shelly R. (posted on July 25, 2003)

Maybe you could try one of the flavor waters. I too have a rough time
drinking plain water but dont have much problem with propel or fruit2o.
either one tastes pretty good and no/very low sugar.

I am almost 20 months post-op and can't drink more than a few sips of
water. I drink Crystal Light and SF Country Time Lemonade (Lem'nBerry
Sippers) almost exclusively. Just can't handle plain water and my surgeon
says this is fine.

I also was a huge water drinker pre-op. I also find that water doesn't
satisfy me at all anymore. I stick to decaf iced tea. I have no problem
getting in 64 oz daily.
Good Luck.

Same problem here. Before surgery I hardly drank anything but water. Since
surgery drinking water even in tiny sips makes my pouch feel funny. My
doctor didn't have an explanation for it either. I have been drinking
Propel and Crystal Light. I only drink the Crystal Light that comes in the
bottles because its made with Splenda and tastes much better to me than the
powdered Crystal Light that you mix yourself. Since I would still rather
have water... I find myself eating a lot of ice chips which don't seem to
bother my tummy... Go figure!

I was told bad taste equals our bodies thinking its bad for us so it
discourages us eating or drinking things like this that taste YUK. But in
this case its OK.

I recently started squeezing a piece (1/4) of lemon into a sports bottle of
water with a few sweet n lows. It's quick lemonade, and goes down much
easier than plain water. I've been able to add an extra bottle (3 cups) a
day.

Congrats on having ketosis????????? Ketosis is 'good' for you? I don't
think so.
Things taste strange at first. This truly goes away several weeks out.

For a new post op who is by necessity on a high protein Atkins like diet
and is burning fat for energy this is indeed normal and good! It means your
loosing well and will go away on its own eventually. Bad breathe, food
tastes bad, some reports of body odor but its all temporary and not bad as
long as you get in your water! Its different than the similiar one
diabetics get.

Shelly I have the same problem it is starting to get better now. I will be
4 weeks post op on Monday. I think just about everyone goes through this. I
squeezed fresh lemons in mine and it went down very well. Just hang in
there and try the best you can. It does get easier!!!!!! Good Luck

FRUIT2O Is the yummiest thing EVER!!!! I hated water before and now I love
it! It is calorie free, fat free, sugar free etc... But the taste is out of
this world!!! Try it..Sams Club sells it by the case!

Shelly, I had the same problem.....loved water before surgery and couldn't
really drink it after. Well I tried sugar-free tang and could drink it
without any problem. Now, at 6 months out I can drink Dasani water again
with no problem. I think it just takes time for our new stomach to adjust
to the minerals, etc. Try the Sugar-Free Tang, it is delicious.

Have you tried putting Crystal Light in your water? It comes in all
different flavors and it tastes great. Maybe that will help you be able to
get the water down.

I am not post-op, yet (this week!), however, I had the same problem. One
of the nurses in the Dr.'s office told me that water may taste bad to all
people at any time when their chemicals are imbalanced. Example: your
dopamine (sp) levels in your brain.

This is VERY common. In fact it seems that it's more common for post ops
to hate water than it is for them to like it. Lots of easy fixes though -
add some sugar free kool-ade, a squeeze of lemon, some crystal lite, some
sugar free Tang, etc. Try Propel, Fruit2O, bottled crystal lite or Minute
Maid Light. It's an easy fix.

I'm 2 months post-op and have trouble drinking water at least once or twice
a week. This morning I had a co-worker taste a brand new bottle of water
because I thought it was bad. She said it tasted great and all I could do
was spit it out. I drink several bottles of water a day but every so often
I get grossed out. I have the same problem with ice. I just wait a few
hours and try again. Brushing my teeth and using mouthwash doesn't help. I
thought it was the vitamins but I guess it's just something else. Please
let me know if you figure out what is causing this. By the way, I've begun
drinking Diet Snapple Raspberry/Cranberry and it tastes great.
