Question:
Does anyone know

Hi there. This may be a silly question but is the protein in eggs in the white or yolk? Anyone know the protein content in just the whites? Thanks for your time!    — Cindy D (posted on July 18, 2003)

I could be wrong here, but I think most of the protein is in the yolk of the egg. I don't know how much is in the whites.

Hi!! Not a silly question... a rather good one!! LOL!! Most of the good protein is in the white. There is somein the yolk, but it also has the cholesteral in it. The entire egg is the Perfect Protein, though! Here are the stats on eggs according to my complete book of food counts: One large raw egg: Whole, 75 calories, 6.3 grams of protein, .6 grams of carbs, 5.0 grams of fat, 213 mg cholesterol, 63 grms of sodium and 0 grams of fiber. The white of a large raw egg has 17 calories, 3.5 grams of protein, .3 grams of carbs, 0 grams of fat, 0 grms of cholesterol, 55 grams of sodum and zero grams of fiber. The yolk of a lagre raw egg has 59 calories, 2.8 grams of protein, .3 grams of carbs, 5.0 grams of fat, 213 mg of cholesterol, 7 grams of sodium and 0 fiber. Hope that helps!! This book is awesome... it is called "The Complete Book of Food Counts by Corinne T. Netzer published by CTN Food COunts it lists raw foods, cooked foods, fast foods, etc... the perfect book for a wls patient! :~)

Sharon: Thanks for that info. I'm gonna go out and get that book; I know it will be a very handy tool after surgery. I knew eggs have alot of cholesterol, but I didn't know they had THAT much! Wow! I never fail to learn something new on this site every day! :0)

Looking it up on Fitday (do a search on egg raw), you come up with the following values for 1 raw egg white (large egg) - 17 calories, 3.5g protein, 0.5g carb, 0g fat. One raw egg yolk - 61 calories, 3.0g of protein, 0.5g carb, 5g fat. So the protein is divided about 50/50 and by eliminating the yolk you can eliminate the fat and a lot of the calories. If you have 2 egg whites, that's 7g of protein and only 34 calories as opposed to eating one whole egg with 78 calories and 6.5g of fat...JR

Just as John remarks, it is pretty close to 50/50 with the wihte part having slightly more than the yolks. The USDA has a good food chart broken down by protein content. This is the web address http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/Data/SR15/wtrank/sr15a203.pdf You need adobe acrobat to read it. Adobe can be downloaded for free if you don't have i. They also have another page with foods broken down by carb content.
