Question:
How many grams of fat and carbs should be in our daily intake?

I am 3 1/2 months post op. I am eating approx. 600-700calories,13grams of fat,36grams of complex carbs (from veggies and fruits only) and 60-80grams a protein daily. I have looked for the information and can't seem to find a straight answer. So what is the recommended carbohydrate and fat gram intake for a post op WLS person? Anyone know the true answer? Is my intake ok? Thanks for the input!    — Jan S. (posted on July 15, 2003)

I think your intake is just fine. High protein, low carbs, good amount of calories for 3 1/2 mo. You didn't mention water, so hopefully your getting in your 64 or more oz a day. There is no magic formula on amounts of calories/proteins/carbs for a post-op, just averages. Some surgeons provide after-care programs with specific calorie/protein/carb amounts, and others just provide for the first few months. For instance, the 60-80 grams of protein a day is about the average, some of the distals get in more protein a day, closer to 100. Some of us don't count fat grams at all-like me! Don't eat anything high fat, but I'm not tied to the fat grams in a food. And the carbs, well, I've seen from a low of 20 to 100 or more, or those that don't even count carbs, just stay away or minimize the bad carbs.

Your intake sounds great to me. You might up the calories just a TAD if you aren't losing like you want. Your protein intake is great for a relatively new postie and those complex carbs will really help keep things regular! I don't watch fat at all, just make sure I get enough protein and that the carbs and total calories don't get out of control. While you're still losing you probably want to stay at around 40 grams of carbs but, remember, that does NOT include fiber! (Fiber is "free" cuz it passes right thru.)
