Question:
I'm 1 week postop lap RNY & eating
I've been hungry on clear fluids so tried real food today. I had 6 oz.water/Gatorade with 3 teaspoons of grits for breakfast, Taco Bell Pintos & Cheese for lunch, and a scrambled egg with a teaspoon each of KFC cole slaw and mashed potatoes. I did fine and I actually feel better tahn taking clear fluids only. Is it O.K. for me to proceed? I also had 24 oz. water today and 24 oz. unsweetened ice tea with Sweet & Low, with a bowl of sugra-free Jello (overall a mixture of clear fluid with soft foods). Thanks for advice and experience from all you "real" posties! — Manuel C. (posted on June 30, 2003)

this is NOT medical advice and I ALWAYS suggest you follow your doctor's
diet. That said, I don't see anything wrong with most of what you
ate...however, you probably shouldn't be putting raw veggies (cole slaw)
into your pouch this soon. It's still healing even if it feels fine to you
and you could do some damage. It's just not worth another surgery is it?
Stick to true soft foods - things you can mush completely with your tongue
if your going to skip the rest of your liquid phase. By the way, I didn't
have a liquid phase once I was released from the hospital - pureed for a
week, then soft foods, then normal as I could tolerate. I wish you the
BEST of luck!

My advice to you is to stay on clear liquids as long as you can. I know
you can tolerate foods OK and it is tempting, but I have noticed that
people who tend to do the liquids longer (3 weeks) lose more! I've lost 61
lbs in less than 2 months post op. I stayed on liquids for 3 weeks and
lost 42 lbs my first month. Now if that's not incentive I don't know what
is! Good luck to you!

I had to eat pureed food before i left the hospital, or i couldnt go home.
I was eating watered down chili within in 6 days after i went home. each dr
and hospital is like the weather, never know what is coming or going, shame
they all can't get on the same page for a change. I had an open RNY in
dec/02 and have lost 97 pounds, other than vitamins i haven't done much of
anything, onch in a while a protien shake or two to kick off a plateau, but
thats about it. Good Luck.........

I agree with Ruth. You shouldn't be putting raw veggies in your new pouch
this soon. It needs time to heal. I was like you and was soooo hungry
after 1 week of liquids I advanced to soft foods on my own. At my two week
check up my Doc said I could continue to advance as tolerated. As it is
said many times, we all are different and our body needs our different as
well. Eat what your body needs, within reason. Just use good judgement.
You can always call your Doc and check with him as all surgeons are also
not the same. Good luck!

My surgeon said cabbage is a definite NO-NO. So nix the cole slaw. Try to
stay with the plan, and you'll probably be better off. Good luck to you.

Lisa - cabbage is a no-no for how long? Forever or until?

Let me be the token naye-sayer in the bunch. First, many of your choices
were high in carbs and those foods can hinder weight loss. I know that
early on some calories are needed (I think we all used a lot of Gatorade to
get through those times), but there really needs to be a balance-- if you
are drinking Gatorade (which has carbs), then avoid the mashed potato.
Secondly, you had lots of fast food-- is this the path you want to proceed
down so soon after surgery?
I had good success sticking to a relatively modest plan in the weeks after
surgery-- liquids for the first week, cloudy liquids for the second week
(and I avoided cremed soups) followed by several weeks of pureed foods. It
worked for me as I dropped 80 pounds the first month and over 35 pounds the
second month-- but, I recognize that we are all very different.
Good luck.

Ruth-forever on cabbage, coconut, celery. The stringy, fiberous substances
can clog your tiny opening, causing the need for surgical intervention. SO
they said. Best of luck.

Thats the first I ever heard of no cabbage forever. I love cole slaw and
stuffed cabbage is a favorite of both me and Jen. I occasionally eat celery
with cream cheese. As far as I know no food is prohibited forever althoughj
everyone may tolerate different things. Celery is in stuffing too. Boy is
every doc different!

I do agree with everyone else early n its not a good idea and eatiung
protein is more important.

I ate two bites of scrambled eggs on day 8. Big mistake! I ended up sick as
a dog and had to have an endoscopy to see if I was blocked. I would be very
careful of what you put in your mouth! Barb

I am sooo relieved that my surgeons "diet" allows for all
vegetables, including cabbage, as tolerated. I LOVE my cabbage (cooked and
raw)!

them to death :>)

My DH had lap RNY on 4/9/03. He was doing well on the pureed diet, but of
course, he thought he was the exception, and could start eating regular
food. One Thursday evening, about 4 weeks post op, he decided he could eat
some cashews if he chewed them well. By Saturday, his stomach was starting
to hurt and he wasn't able to get down much food at all, and he started
having dry heaves. By Sunday he was so miserable, I called the doctor on
call to get some Phenergan. On Monday he called the surgeon's office(and
got blown off). He went with me the next day (I had a follow up
appointment) and told the surgeon what was going on. The next day he had
an endoscopy and wound up staying in the hospital overnight - he had some
"debris" lodged at the anastamosis, with some old blood. When
the surgeon cleaned it away, an area continued to ooze blood, so the
surgeon admitted him. He only had to stay overnight, and once the junk was
removed, he felt much, much better. Is it worth it to you to possibly wind
up like this? Stick with the plan your surgeon advises, even if you are
bored with it. You need to heal first (and foremost!)

You not doing too bad, but I would forget about the cole slaw for a while.
The potatoes, and beans sound good. Make sure you chew chew chew. You
really should try puree foods. ( my opinion) :)
