Question:
Which is the best surgery for those who plan to be pregnant later?
I have a friend who wishes to have WLS...she wants to become pregnant after her weight loss and is concerned about proper nutrition during pregnancy. Can anyone who has researched this share the pros and cons they discovered w/ the LAP BAND vs. th e RNY?????? — E. V. (posted on June 29, 2003)

There is a yahoo group for post WLS pregnancy. Go to www.yahoo.com, choose
groups, then do a search for OSSG pregnancy. This has not been an issue
for me since I was post-menopausal when I had my surgery, but I'm sure you
will get lots of information there.

From what my doctor told me (pre-op Lap RNY) the biggest issues are A.
dropping a large amount of weight WHILE pregnant...so he recommends waiting
2 years before getting PG so the weight isn't still just falling off. B.
Nutrional Intake...He said that this is the biggest issue and regardless of
the surgery you have, it is recommend you take your normal vitamins and
start prenatal vitamins BEFORE getting pg and have frequent blood work
during Pregnancy. He said that the only real difference between the
surgeries is how my intestine is bypass and how the stomach is seperated
and the malapsorbsion (SP) rate. My best advice is simply to ask the
surgeon what he thinks.
