Question:
5 mos post, how much is too much shrimp?

I buy IQF shrimp at the grocery store in the 41/60 count bag (more on the 60 side I'm sure!). I just ate 15 of those little suckers. Is that WAY too much? I'm satisfied...not overly full. But when I counted up the tails and discovered I'd eaten that many I was surprised even though it was the only thing I ate for lunch today. How much shrimp can other 5 month + post ops eat??    — Rhoni333 (posted on June 26, 2003)

Others may disagree with me, but this is my guide. Eat slow, chew well, and eat ONLY until satified. NOT full. If you can do these things, then you never should have to worry about over eating. ;) Somedays you WILL eat more than others. Other days you won't or can't eat much. Just eat slow, chew well and only until you are satisfied and you will NOT stretch your pouch. :)

Hi!! I'm 18 months out and at 5 months, I could eat anywhere from three to twenty shrimp that size! LOL!! It really depends on what my body wants! Even now, one day I can eat five shrimp, another day only two, and another day fifteen! LOL!! You are doing fine as long as you don't let yourself get over full and you chew them up really good! :~)

Can't answer that for you. But what I can say is to try not to let yourself get out of control like that. Put out a certain number of shrimp next time and put the rest away. That way you're not blindly eating and wondering what hit you after the fact (something that got me to 324 pounds). Good luck and God Bless!

I can't really picture how big that size shrimp is, but the average should be 50 per pound. 15 shrimp is then around a third of a pound, or about 5 ounces (actually, a little less since the tails counted in the weight, but you didn't eat them). That's more than I could generally eat at a meal now (3 months post-op), but isn't a ridiculously large amount of food, especially since the shrimp is all you ate. I agree with an earliest poster about measuring out your portion ahead and then putting the package away so that you don't accidentally eat more than you intended to. Portion size has always been my biggest food problem, and that's the only way I can relearn what an appropriate amount of food is. But, it sounds like you're doing great. You didn't get sick, and, if you did eat too much, at least it was all protein!

if (and i'm speculating here) 41/60 means 60 shrimp/pound, then you've only eaten about 2 oz if you ate 15. at 41/lb, you're still just a little over 3 oz. sounds absolutely fine if my theory on shrimp measurements is right!

I'm 6 weeks out today and I eat about 12-15 shrimp at a time depending on how big they are. I don't get overly full with that. Just satisfied. If I eat something else with them, of course then I eat less. Enjoy your shrimp!

Shrimp are low in fat and calories. I have 10 to 15 medium shrimp at one sitting. Every 10 shrimp are 60 calories and 10g of protein. At 5 months out I think you are okay.
