Question:
Has anyone had a Greenfilfilter (GFF) placed in a vein to stop a blood clot for WLS?

I asked my internist and he said it was unnecessary. The filter can travel
and lets say it does catch a clot, then the blood supply gets clogged up
behind the filter, which may be somewhere else by now.
Now he didn't say there is never a time when it is needed, just that as a
standard part of WLS, it would be unnecessary. Each patient is different.

Our surgeon insisted that my husband have a Greenfield filter placed before
he would perform his RNY. This was because he had had two previous
episodes of blood clots in his legs and lungs. Ordinarily, Greenfield
filter placement is not required or necessary prior to WLS. However, it
can be a good thing to consider if there has ever been a previous history
of blood clots. The procedure was done on an outpatient basis under IV
sedation. My husband doesn't remember anything about the procedure, had a
very successful WLS, and has had no complications or problems related to
the filter in the two years that it has been in place. Best wishes!

I went in to have my filter one week prior to my WLS. I had DVT when I was
pregnant 15 years ago. As a precationary measure, my Dr insistanted that I
have it done. I went in and to tell you ther truth I don't even know where
it is. It is vitually pain less. I was under for it but went home the same
day. Piece of cake!
