Question:
SHOULD I BE ABLE TO EAT A WHOLE BANANA?

I cut a banana in half and ate it but that didn't seem to satisfy me so I ate the other half too and that filled me up. Is that okay? or should I have stopped after the half. I'm having a problem with portion control.    — Peggy D. (posted on May 6, 2003)

A banana, onced chewed, is pretty well liquified, so this makes sense to me. And you are a year post-op, so it would seem to me that you should be able to eat more than you could 6 months ago. I think you are doing fine.

At a year post-op I could definitely eat a whole banana. Bananas are good for you-potassium...

At 15 months out, I can eat a whole banana. I can also eat 2 oranges at once. I really find that I can eat a lot of fruit, presumably because it has so much liquid content. On the othe hand, I can only eat a tiny amount of steak at dinner -- it's much more solid and filling.

I am 2 months postop and I can eat a whole banana. I think this is a good thing. We worry too much. My doctor recommended making healthy choices, listen to your body and eat until you feel full. I have lost over 60 lbs so far, so I think he is right. Plus, it teaches you to recognize your own signs rather than comparing yourself to other people. Good luck!

The softer the food the more it will take to fill you up. Like the other postie, a tiny bit of steak or chicken will really fill me up... a salad or watermelon on the other hand, I can eat quite a bit of. Listen to your body. It will tell you what you need. I have lost 130 lbs in 10 months and that is what I do. Don't be so anxious, just pay attention to how you feel. As long as you stop when you begin to feel full, you will be fine.

While I agree that we should eat until satiated, I think a whole banana is a lot of sugars to put in the body. I'd recommend (for what it's worth) that you make it a part of your meal and not the whole meal. Maybe eat some cottage cheese first and finish with 1/3 to 1/2 a banana. JMHO
