Question:
Will Prozac capsules go down ok post-op?
I'm concerned about Prozac capsules..they arent pills that can be cut in half. Do they go down ok, or is liquid the only other choice. thanks. — deespol (posted on May 5, 2003)

My nurse expected me to take them the day after surgery, as if it'd be
fine- and it was! Prozac is pretty small and b/c its a capsule goes down
fairly easy- I never had any problems with it. Goodluck to you!

I was taking the Prozac capsules, 40mg pre-op. I stopped takign them the
day before surgery and have not been able to take them since. The capsules
will get stuck in your stoma and make you very ill. They tried to open them
up and pour the medication into jello, but that was so disgusting, I just
opted to not take it at all. There is no liquid form of Prozac. If you
really feel you need something, maybe you could talk to your PCP for
another medication that comes in pill form and can be broken in half. Yo be
honest, I've not taken the Prozac in 20 days and I feel fantastic, like I
never needed it! ~Jessica, 19 days post-op and down 29 pounds and 1 size

Denise, I took the pill form of effexor in the hospital (the day of surgery
I took my regular effexor xr capsule). But when I went home my Doctor told
me to take the capsule that it would be fine. It was I have been taking
the normal prescription 75mg of effexor xr twice a day and have felt no
discomfort or pain. My surgery was 04-29-03, just less than a week ago.
So don't worry. If you do have problems your doctor and put you on the
regular effexor if necessary.

There is a liquid form of Prozac, but it tastes awful. I took that for the
first month and then switched to tablets. The capsules are time-released
so they will not absorb properly. The tablets are small and come in
20mg(I'm on 60mg) so I take them all at the same time. Hope this helps.
Best wishes!

Hi- I am taking the prozac capsules and they go down okay as long as I
drink something just before taking them. There is a liquid prozac but it
is really really gross tasting. The capsules have never given me any
problem.

I was put on the liquid prozac at my two week post op. I agree, it is some
nasty stuff. After that was used up I went back to the capsule. haven't
had any problems at all

I took liquid prozac in the hospital and it was NASTY. By week 2, I was
taking capsules one at a time. I take 5 capsules a day and no problem.
(Yes, I know it's a high dose!)

Thanks for pointing that out, Patricia. I asked before surgery if there was
a liquid form and the nurse told me no and kind of laughed that I even
asked. ~Jessica
