Question:
Can anyone else eat a WHOLE burger?
I'm 13 months out and have lost approximately 110 lbs. Still want to loose another 30-40. Anyway, I can eat a WHOLE hamburger (8oz thick patti on bun!). Sometimes I can just eat part of it and sometimes I can eat the whole thing! I don't eat anything with it, but it seems like that is alot? What do you think? — Kay W. (posted on April 15, 2003)

I found out this weekend that I can eat a McDonald's cheeseburger happy
meal (don't ask... long road trip w/ three little kids). I had most of the
fries too. Bummer. At least I didn't drink the coke!! ;-)

Sometimes I can and sometimes, I can't. Sometimes I can eat a 6 inch
meatball sub from subway, and sometimes, I can only eat 2 bites. Some
mornings I can eat 2 fried eggs and some mornings, I can barely eat 1
egg...it's weird. Have a Sparkling Day!! ~CAE~

I can not eat beef at all. I have tried and it always comes back up. 1
year post-op down 135 lbs and in a size 8. I try and stay away from meat
it really gives me a sick feeling. So I do a lot of beans, cheese and
other things.

I am 13 months PO -200lbs and can not eat a whole burger. I can eat about
half of a quarter pounder w/cheese and some fries. But some days I can not
eat even a 1/4 of it, just depends. It goes thru me so fast tho I never
really worry about how much it is. Also, if I eat really really slow like
taking forever I eat more. That usually happens if I am working and eating
at the same time so I try to avoid that. **13 months PO, -200lbs, crt wgt

I had an 8 ounces cheeseburger last night. I ate about 2/3 of it, but
honestly probably could have had more. I am atthe point now, where I need
to make a conscious effort to push the plate away. However, I do not eat
ANY bun. In fact I order it without the bun and fries. I got mixed
veggies instead, and ate a little more than half of the portion.

I agree with a previous poster...sometimes I can, sometimes I can't. I
usually throw most of the bread away anyway. The only burgers I eat are
jr. whopper and jr. burger at wendy's. I eat nothing else with them. If
you think about it....it is not a lot (small burger) but the carbs are
high. I usually chose something else but sometimes I just have to have a
burger and I found that if I eat what I am craving that it is easier to get
back on track quicker. Just get the craving out of the way and go
on...(Open RNY, start 317, Now 160, lost 157lbs. 2/23/02)

How long does it take you to eat it? I find that if I eat rapidly, or at a
normal pace for me, then I fill up rather quickly. I could probably eat
1/2 to 3/4 of the burger with a bun and I am 14 months post-op. However,
if I eat very slowly and take breaks inbetween eating, I could easily make
room and eat the whole thing. So, what I have learned is to eat normally
with no rest breaks and when I start to feel full, push the rest away and
get rid of it-do not leave it lying around or it will get eaten...(it
speaks to me... Eat me!)

Did you weight the burger before or after you cooked it? If it was 8oz
before, it probably ended up being about 6oz after cooked. Either way,
after a year post-op we're supposed to eat about 6-8 oz, so I wouldn't
worry too much about it. But don't let yourself eat more than tha quantity
or it may end up slowing the loss or gaining. I'm 11 months post-op and eat
about 2/3 of a McD's regular cheeseburger, but less than half the bread.
Some days I can eat more, some less, that seems to be a recurrent theme,
huh? Goodluck to you!

I can eat a whole burger and even a couple of french fries. But I can't
eat it if it is a fast food type of greasy burger. I am 11 months post op
and way below goal.

Hmm, Geez, I'm almost ashamed to admit it, but I'm 26 months out (2yrs, 2
months) and can eat an entire Burger King Whopper, no onions, no pickles
and most of the fries, it takes about hmm, 15-20 minutes while driving. No
drink. I'm so ashamed! I don't drink soda, so about 30 minutes later I
finish most of my 24 oz ICE Mountain water bottle. (This can't be normal)
As a matter of fact I came to the Q&A board to seek help and guidance
on my fellow Post Opp'ers. Question to follow...

Kay,
I can eat a WHOLE hamburger, from Mc Donald's, they're not that bad, I get
it wit no cheese, I'm able to eat it all and feel semi-full, I know I
could probably eat more but really don't want to over do it, The hamburgers
aren't that bad as long as the choice is right, I think that Mc Donald's
hamburgers are the least of all of them regarding calorie wise, I have yet
to try another fast food joint, in fear I would like it too too much ! ...
Some days I'm just like you able to eat more, then other days I find myself
eating less, weird I know... I know exactly how you feel I'm able to eat
allot now, and I'm almost 11 months out, down about 127 pounds and holding,
and about 18 pounds away from my personal goal....
I find that I'm able to eat a rather large amount before I'm full, in fact
the other day I ate for dinner, 4 cheese taquitos, and a lean cusine meal,
hence it's about 450 calories, I thought I only had a 4-8 ounce pouch,
....... the lean cuisine alone was 8 ounces but somehow I was able to eat
it, I felt content after wards , no really stuffed....
I would just try to at this point control your portions as much as
possible, count everything you eat, whether you're counting carbs or
calories, or even fats.......
As long as you're keeping track of what you're eating and you don't make it
an everyday choice I think you'll be just fine and you'll being seeing your
goal before you know it...
Keep your head up! Smile

I am three years post op and can eat whole hamburger but not in one
setting. I eat half of hamburger then eat the other half later. I still
don't tolerate fries too well. I usually don't eat fast food because it
doesn't agree with my stomach.

I'm 2 years out and it takes me a very long time to get the entire burger
down. If I'm craving burgers, I will get a kids meal hamburger. Even
then, it's a slow process. For some reason I can't tolerate hamburger like
I could before surgery. I used to love BK whoppers with all the trimmings
and the smell of it makes me sick!

I can eat a whole burger, I can even eat an entire McD's quarter pounder
with cheese. I have been able to eat this since I was about 4-5 mos out. I
only eat it occasionally, but, I can do it without any trouble. I do
either cheeseburgers (w/out the bun) 2-3 times per week. 90% lean ground
beef is a like 300 calories and 32g of protein, so, its a great meal. Good
Luck to you, Heather (Open Rny 8/15 - 305/198/150)

I can eat a whole burger, minus the top 1/2 of the bun (I am 7 months post
op). I tend to eat turkey burgers though, less calories and fat.

I could with NO problem and the fries too if I was inclined. Plus more.
And quickly. 8 months out - never full, never sick, no explanation. The
collective wisdom of my doctor (PCP), her assistant, my surgeon, his PA, my
shrink, and my nutritionist is, "You should be throwing up." I
had a great start with this "tool", but too quickly it's totally
up to me again. If I was good at willpower, I wouldn't have needed
surgery! Oh well, I can do this!!!!

How funny, I came here to post the same question about eating a whole
hamburger!! hehehe I'm a little over 6 months post, and ate a whole famous
star with only one bun. Would you guys consider this a bad meal? I mean
it's iron, protein, veggies, and fat, but since we malabsorb fat, should we
even worry about that? What do you guys think?

I can eat most of a small burger, sometimes all of it. I however can not
tolerate hamburger with grisle in it. So I usually only eat burgers at home
that I make with lean high quality meat. Sometimes I even grind my own.
