Question:
5 weeks post op, drinking water causes stomach ache....
I can't drink water without feeling sick to my stomach. I can drink Crystal Lite, Diet Snapple, Ice Tea, Skim milk and pretty much anything else that is sugar free or no carbonation, but water is the only drink that makes me feel sick...spoke with my Doctor on this issue and he said it was normal. So if someone else out there has any kind of insight on this issue and can let me know how long it lasts, that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. — Jill C. (posted on April 6, 2003)

You may want to try it at a different temperature. If ice water gives your
pouch grief, try room temp water and vice versa...JR

I have the same problem, but not only with water with all fluid, doesn't
matter what the temperature is. I find I have to drink about 20 mi. after
I eat. I need padding in bottom of my pouch before I drink or it HURTS!!!!

Hi,
I have the same problem. Water kills me. Im hoping this will go away in
time. Try exhaling before you swallow. I tried that today and it helps a
little. Not so much air going into the pouch. Also try drinking through a
straw. It still hurts me but not as much. Water is so important and Im so
afraid of dehydration. If anyone has any answers please let me know.
Thanks

I am at 13 weeks and still have this problem. I love water too. I find
that I am like the previous poster who drinks about 20 min after eating. I
do need something in my pouch before drinking water. I do drink coffee in
the am and no problem followed by a watery (not thick) protein drink and no
problem. Water is the only thing that gives me fits.

Hi, I'm 6 weeks post and no longer have a problem with water, but I did at
first. I found that bottled water doesn't sit well with me. Tap water is
by far the best, my system must just be more used to it. I also drink a
lot of Gatoraide's Propel fitness water. Not only does it have extra B
vitamins but the flavor is just enough to settle the tummy :)

Hi, I'm almost 5 months postop and am able to drink water now. In the
beginning I couldn't drink it either because it hurt, cold or tap. It
still will occasionally make my stomach hurt. I drink ALOT of decaf ice
tea, it goes down much better!!

I'm not sure why this is, but it seems to be very common for new post-ops.
I also had a tough time with water from Day 1 until about 3 weeks out.
Then suddenly I could drink it a little faster and a little colder and it
didn't hurt anymore. The whole 3 weeks I still continued to drink my
water, even though it hurt to do so, I just drank alot more Crystal Light
and decaf tea to make up for any water I couldn't drink anymore that day.
It's a day-to-day stuggle sometimes but just hang in there, BETTER DAYS ARE
AHEAD!!<br>

I have had similar problems since my surgery. I cannot tolerate regular tap
water. I have bought case after case of bottled water, until a few weeks
ago, we had a reverse osmosis system put in our home. Now I just refill all
my empty water bottles. And the water tastes great!
