Question:
Question about weight watchers points
I DONT KNOW IF THIS IS A SILLY QUESTION,I HAVE CONSIDERED JOINING WEIGHT WATCHERS BECAUSE IM NOT LOSING. DO WE FOLLOW THE POINTS FOR OUR WEIGHT, OR DO WE LOWER THE POINTS BECAUSE OUR STOMACHES ARE SMALLER? — Schatzie1 (posted on February 24, 2003)

I have done weight watchers before and even though I am pre-op I don't see
how you could get in the recommended amount of "points" without
snacking like crazy. I guess it all depends how far post op you are and how
much food you can tolerate now.

I have done WW before. I would figure out how many calories you need (ask
your doctor) and then figure out the points, roughly 50-60 per point. WW
gives you more points the more you weigh, so don't follow their points for
how much you weigh. Good luck!

I wouldn't recommend WW yet since you're so early post-op. (less than 5
months it looks like?) Get our your "pouch rules"... make sure
you're following them. If you are, then it's just a plateau so hang in
there. You will lose better following the rules than w/ WW at this point.

I joined WW Jan 13 I lost 12 pounds withing the first 2 weeks, the point
system is good I ate very little and stayed full, I never went over my
points actually I did not use all my points in 1 day, I am still on it only
differnce I am not writing everything down like I was , it just teaches you
how to eat

I joined ww in mid Nov cause I needed some major motivation to drink water,
exercise and watch what I eat, and I have always enjoyed the program. I
was on the plateau from hell, and I have lost about 15lbs since then.
Here's the thing that freaks me out...I just got into the 20-25 points
range (I am finally under 170lbs -yeah! ME!) but even in the higher range
I had a tough time keeping in it...It seems I pretty much bypass the range
every day. Not really intending to, I don't really snack, but I can eat a
normal meal, and they add up quickly (eg. this am I had a little over 1/2
of a skillet bkfast and a slice of toast, which is around 10pts, today for
lunch I had a deep fried pork chop and a few bites of rice (tack on another
8pts or so, this wouldn't have normally been my choice, but I am on travel,
so what can you do?) and I think tonite I will have some Italian - perhaps
3/4 of a restaurant plate of lasagne, maybe a roll.) Now, technically I
have 7 points left, but I am sure my dinner tonite will count for more. I
am still losing though, and not going totally crazy. Why am I still doing
it?...cause I really want my 10% weight loss key chain (maybe this Sat.?)
and my lifetime membership. I haven't confessed my WLS secret to my leader
or the other members but I am getting a sense of acomplishment every week
by seeing the scales go down...I look at this way... It's helping me reach
my ultimate goal, and god knows I have EARNED it after all these years.
Good luck to you in whatever you decide.

I disagree with you , if u already have WLS why are u still going to
weight watchers ????? why would u want the rewards they give lifetime
membership yata yata , when you havent earned it , the people I have seen
at weight watchers are very honest and upfront and no they have not had
WLS, there losing the weight without the tool of WLS, but you have your
tool..........I think you should be honest with the people in your Group !!
they praise people each week for there loss, and if u lose in 1 week and
credit weight watchers you get the praise, but your a WLS patient that
just dishonest as can be ............and I should not post this but I am
going to anyway

Just FYI, Tammy -- others have posted here who found they got a chilly
reception at WW once they disclosed they'd had WLS. I'm sure it depends on
the group, but I can understand not disclosing it. And please note that
plenty of post-ops need support in re-learning their eating habits, which
has less and less to do with the surgery and the pouch as time goes on, and
more and more to do with the types of balanced eating that they teach at
WW. Plenty of post-ops use it to help with plateaus and lifestyle changes,
and IMHO, there's nothing "dishonest" about doing so.

By all means, join WW! BUT, be realistic about it. I am still pre-op.
I've done WW in the past and honestly enjoyed doing it. Unfortunately, I
have a bad habit of quitting things that make me feel good. I've since
worked on that and continue doing so.
Whether you disclose the WLS or not is strictly up to you. I think that
going to the meetings and being accountable is a good thing. My plan is to
join once I am post-op, but have not yet decided if I will go weekly or
bi-weekly. Either way, WW gives you rewards for achieving goals. Your
dues pay for their leadership AND those rewards. Basically, it is a
support group and a service in one.
As far as how many points you eat, talk it over with your doctor. I would
think you'd eat less than what the 'normal' WW member would eat.
Every weightloss program has a disclaimer that everyone loses at their own
pace. Because you have an added 'tool' does not make you less of a person,
just more likely to succeed.
Go for it...but first get your head in order. Get back to what you're
supposed to be doing.
I'll be rooting for you!!

Well, Tammy, thank you for your very judgemental response to my post...for
your information...I am following the WW program, paying my $, and when I
reach my lifetime membership, I will have EARNED it, whether I have had WLS
or NOT. So, you're free to think what you want about me, but I am NOT
ashamed, nor do I feel I am doing anything dishonest. Geeze! Some of the
people on this board...

I had to learn how to eat right long term so I joined WW when I was a new
post op. Somewhere down the road you will appreciate the learned experience
of the correct way to eat . My group new I had surgery and my leader
understood the need I had for increased protein. Another lady in my group
was a WLS patient , she was 15 yrs post op. She had put on about 25 lbs in
those 15 yrs and joined to get it off. My WW leader's husband ended up
having the surgery himself so I helped guide him and give support to her.
WW is a great program , even though many times before WLS I tried it and
failed I new it was right for me long term.

I certainly think WW is one way to go. Is there a support group in your
area. I would fit the point style to smaller pouch. I think Tammy missed
your point. You are not losing you said. When I was in WW everyone knew you
could adjust your goal for lifetime achievement etc. And besides maybe
support is what you are really looking for. There are many food plans in WW
and I would not be surprised if they didn't come up with one for WLS
people.

Rebecca........I did not think I was being Judgemental , I call it as I see
it, as for some people on the boards like you said . you dont know me and
I am a very nice person But if your going to flip because I made a comment
, well you must be upset because I am right and its the truth.

As immature as it may be, Tammy, I am going to have the last word in
this...I noticed from your profile you have not had WLS yet. If you are
having such sucess with WW and are so superior to the rest of us, why don't
you go ahead and just do it "on your own"? I rarely get angry on
this board, but you have p*%%#^ me off with your judgements...you are NOT
right about me, and are NOT welcome to respond to me either in this forum,
or by email. Thank you.

Ya know there are some people who had WLS- LIKE surgeries or other medical
conditions who perhaps still attend WW. Should they have to disclose that?
WW is a great tool, WLS or not. I don't think it's anyone's business if I
go to WW or a GYM, if I follow the program, I follow the program. If I am
sucessful, don't knock me! Because my stomach is smaller than mosts'
doesn't mean my HEAD isn't like theirs and I think thats what really
counts. I don't consider it "cheating" and if you have done a
good job following the program, you deserve praise. WLS does not control
cravings, or structure... it just shrinks your stomach size. While you can
use this to your advantage, some of us still need more.

Rebecca .........LMAO
first of all WW did not work for me DUH! that is why I am persuing
WLS...all I said is WW showed me how to eat, But I am not going there to
take advantage of there rewards.......and even when I do have my surgery
witch will be very soon I still wont go to WW because, but more power to ya
and sorry but I do have last word and if you got yourself all pissed off
than boo hoo to you , reamber you took it to exstreams.....and I have no
desire to email you or chat with u , have a nice life

Wow! I think this is a little out of hand! I go to WW because I needed
the extra motivation and support. Like one of the previous posters said
our stomach is smaller but we still have to do the work. I have worked very
hard for my success and I have to pass up temptations daily. I chose not
to tell the people at WW about my surgery because I think people look at my
weight loss differently when they hear that I had surgery. Sometimes they
think I took the "easy way out" and like I said before, I have
worked VERY hard for what I have done. I watch my carbohydrates, exercise
5 times a week, drink my water, get in my protein, vitamins etc. I keep
track of my points and some days I get in what they recommend and other
days I don't get in all the points. I think anyone who goes to WW (whether
they had surgery or not) deserves the rewards because it is hard work no
matter how you choose to lose it. And to the poster who has not had
surgery yet(I don't remember your name and I can't go back to check while
I'm typing this): If you are going in to this thinking that this is going
to be a piece of cake and you are not going to have to do any work, then do
some more research because it's not easy! Cheryl

I plateaued big time at WW and I plateau now after WLS. Losing weight is
STILL a struggle and I think that if I felt like it, I would go to WW for
the support and the idea exchange and not feel a bit guilty. When I was at
WW, I received little ribbons for every 5 lbs lost. It was nice to get a
ribbon but I paid for those ribbons with my dues. :)
