Question:
Anyone else able to take normal bites and eat faster?

I was wondering if anyone else is able to take somewhat normal bites along with chewing well and be done eating in a short amount of time. I've seen others say that it takes anywhere from 15-30 or more minutes to eat. I can usually eat my small meal within 5-10 minutes. I do chew it well and have only gotten sick once (on a pork chop). Is this normal? — Ruthie K. (posted on February 13, 2003)

I hope its normal cause I'm able to do the same thing. I just chalk it up to being lucky. It does take me more lke 15-30 minutes to eat dinner. But 5-10 sounds right for lunch and breakfast. I'm losing wonderfully at 77lbs in 4 1/2 months. Hope this helps. If it really bugs you, talk to your doc. Good luck.

Ruthie, I do what you do, I am 6 mos out and down 92lbs, I eat my whole meal in 10 minutes max, maybe 15...I find that when i eat with friends or go out for dinner and spread it over a longer period of time I can eat double even triple, WHICH IS REAL BAD! I even drink water up to 5 mins before I start to eat (per my nutrionist), this makes me water logged! Good Luck!

I don't know about "NORMAL" but yep thats me! I remember pre op practicing ~slow long chewing~. I had read about folks that were physically unable to eat fast and got deathly ill if they swallowed anything too big... to the point of having to use meat tenderizer (ouch!) I didn't want any of that! To my dismay I eventually learned I wasn't a dumper nor did I hafta chew things to a pulp. I have never gotten sick or had anything get stuck. The only thing different post op for me is the volume I can eat (thank goodnes!) That's what's normal for me, but I always try to stay away from labeling anyting as normal =)

I was wondering about this myself as I scarfed down 12 oz of cottage cheese. OMG, is that too much to eat, did I eat it too fast? --Jen

Ruthie, I, like you can eat my meals in under 10 minutes. I really have to think about it to even spread it out that long. I guess it's also because I am always trying to do something else and just want that instant gratification and then I am off to another venture. Hopefully this is normal for us and we will see the results we want to see. I am 4 months out and have lost 75lbs ... Oh yeah ... so we must be doing something right.

I pretty much finish my meals within 10 minutes. I do try and chew more thouroughly than I did preop. If I eat to fast or swallow something that hasn't been properly chewed, I suffer afterwards.

Somewhere along the way (I am 1 year post-op), I just noticed that I started eating normally-normal size bites and chews-like i did pre-op. Early post-op you are conscious of every bite and every chew, but it does change after a certain amount of time (6 months or so??) As for time, it seems like as soon as the meal is started, I am full! Guess that means I eat too fast...

Yes, at about 7 months post-op I was able to take normal bites and eat at a normal rate of speed. I try to put my fork down between bites because I will finish long before the people I'm sharing a meal with, so i just enjoy my food and remember that it's quality over quantity! I'm one year post-op now and doing very well. I've dropped 122 poubnds and am 10# from my goal weight. I eat about 4-5 oz of protein 2-3 times/day and a salad or non-starch veggie with lunch and dinner. I also drink 4-5 24 oz bottles of water a day and 1-2 cups of coffee. Hope this helps...Diane

I finish eating in about 5 minutes... sometimes 10. I'm a fast eater and don't chew very well. (I'm trying to do better). If I try to make my food last for 30 minutes then I eat alot more.
