Question:
Protein question for the posties?
I am about 3.5 months out and wasn't getting in enough protein so I am adding shakes. Didn't like real meals so I am using Proscore 100 which is pretty good. I am down 56lbs, which I feel is average. My question is I don't eat breakfast so I am having a shake as my breakfast. But can you substitue more than one meal a day with a shake. I know the protein intake will be great, but I only do three meals a day, could two be shakes???? Thanks for the advice! — Shanchel (posted on January 9, 2003)

I'm almost 7 months post-op and down 106 pounds. I have been drinking an
Isopure protein drink every day for breakfast and eating a protein bar for
lunch for months now. I will occasionally have a few crackers or some
sugarfree candy at work too. The only real food I normally eat is at
dinner time and that is sometimes only popcorn. I do take vitamins and
supplements and I do try to get my water in also. I think I'll probably
slowly start adding more "real food" into my repetoire - but not
until I feel like it. I don't see any reason why you couldn't do shakes
for 2 of your meals but it might be good to check with your physician just
to be safe. Good Luck!

Congrats on the great weight loss! I also don't eat breakfast often, will
usually do a carnation instant breakfast instead. Then I have lunch,,
dinner, part of an Isopure (protein drink) and then another small meal.
Because you are still pretty new post-op, i think it's ok to substitute,
but you will sometimes find that the more you eat the more weight you lose,
it's not what we are used to! I don't get enough protein either and am
working on it. But I would personally add the protein shakes in addition to
your meals. Most surgeons want you to eat atleast 3 meals a day if not 5
smaller ones. Goodluck to you, I knwo the protein can be hard, I'm 7
months post-op down almost 100 pounds and still struggling with the
protein!

Proscore 100 Chocolate ROCKS, doesn't it? I love that protein shake, just
with water! But personally, there's no way I could get by on one meal a
day and two protein shakes. Even at 3.5 months out, I had two protein
shakes a day (one between breakfast and lunch, and one at bedtime), plus
the usual three WLS-sized squares, and sometimes a snack, too. In other
words, counting the shakes as meals, 5-6 meals a day. Even counting the
shakes, my calories were around 900-1000 a day by 3.5 months out. Now, at
seven months out, it's the same regime, but the calories are 1100-1200 a
day (still two Proscore 100's a day, too ... I wouldn't give 'em up!). And
I'm still losing just fine (and very nearly at goal). <P>I agree
with the previous poster. To train your metabolism to burn well, you'd
probably do best by eating several small meals a day, not rocking your
system in and out of starvation by eating just once (!!) a day. And try to
eat breakfast, willya? ;) I never ate breakfast as an M.O., and I eat it
all the time now (sad lesson learned: skipping breakfast made me fatter,
not thinner). CONGRATS on your success and good luck on your journey!
