Question:
When Will My Appetite Return? 8 Months Post Op
I never in a million years thought I'd be saying this. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining but I just want to be healthy. I am 8 months post-op RNY & just had my gall bladder out about a month ago. Ever since my gall bladder surgery I'm never hungry anymore! I don't know why! It's almost like it was early on post-op! Then I got a little of my appetite back & it's like every since my gall bladder surgery I have no appetite at all again! I'm really starting to lose the weight now. I've had my blood work checked & everything seems to be normal? I have gone from a size 26 to now I am fitting in to a size 12 jeans!! Again not that I am complaining but is that normal? I am so excited but just want to be healthy! Will my appetite come back? Do you think this is due to my gall bladder just being taken out? Thanks! — Allison T. (posted on December 17, 2002)

Allison,
Don't knock it. I am a little over a year post-op and some days I am
hungry all day long. I long for the days when I had no appetite at all. I
still have days when I don't want to eat much, but I have others when all I
want to do is eat.

It is the surgery that has made you lose your appetite again. I have had a
few surgeries and afterwards have no appetite for a while. Unfortunately
it doesn't last and the appetite will come back. Hmmmm, maybe I need to
schedule another surgery?!

Allison, it took most of a year before my appetite really came back. But,
even then, it has not come back to the way it was before. I think part of
that is re-training myself & learning better habits, but I also think a
part is just that my appetite has never returned with the force it had
before. On days when I am really busy & preoccupied, I often forget to
eat. I may suddenly realize that I haven't eaten in 9 or 10
hours....especially when shopping! :) THEN, I have to be very careful to
eat very slowly or I will vomit. I DO get hungry, but never that ravenous,
"I will eat anything" hunger I had before. It's totally
manageable now.
