Question:
I have several questions, so here goes... First I am 2 days pre-op, and am on clear

liquids, I was wondering, if I could suck on sugar-free hard candy (SorBee)? Also this is a post-op question... Is it possible to add unflavored protien powder to jello? Last one... I promise.... I was wondering if it would be cheaper, and better tasting to add some unflavored protien powder to Sugar free Carnation instant breakfeast. Any input is greatly appriciated!!! Thanks again!!!    — Crissy P. (posted on December 14, 2002)

Hi there, Crissy! I personally did not try candy until I was past 2 months post op. Not sure about the jello, for some reason I can't tolerate it, even the sf kind. As far as adding protein powder to the sf Carnation instant breakfast....I do it everyday. I have a glass of milk, one scoop of strawberry flavored protein powder and the vanilla sf instant breakfast. I get almost half the protein I need just in breakfast alone! Hope this helps, Vi. open RNY 9/23/02 down 79 lbs.

As far as sucking on the hard candy before surgery, I have no idea - my doctor had me on clear liquds for the day before surgery and that's all I had. As for after the surgery, check the calories on sugar free candy. I am over a year post-op and I still don't do sugar free candy because it is so high in calories. And much of that stuff is sweetened with manitol and it can cause terrible diahrrea. So, my advice to you would be to avoid the trap of the sugar free candy. I think that there will be plenty of time for that sort of stuff after we reach our goals. I had an infection in my jaw and my surgeon had me suck on lemon drops (the real thing) to make me salivate more. Well, they have less calories than the sugar free ones. Unfortunately I ate one too many an dumped.

Crissy~ I am most definately not going to tell you to go against surgeon's orders, but I can't see why the candy would hurt you. My surgery is Monday too and I have no eating restrictions until tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon. I can't help you with your other questions.

I was terrified of the hard candies because I was afraid I would swallow it by accident....I used sugar free lollipops instead so I could hold onto the stick! I limit myself to one a day, I am an ex smoker and post op I needed SOMETHING!
