Question:
What vitamins/supplements do we need to take post-op?
I have bought sublingual liquid B-12, and also adult liquid tylenol to have on hand. What other vitamins/supplements do I need to buy? I have One-A-Day for women here at home--can I still take those after surgery? Thanks for your help---Martha (surgery date 12-18-02). — asumamma1 (posted on December 8, 2002)

The B-12 is right, you also need childrens chewable vits, 2 a day. You
need calcium, 2 ultra tums everyday. You need Iron, 2-325mg everyday. You
may also need a stool softener, it would be wise to have this when you get
home from hospital. You might want to ask your dr. for prescription for
Zantac, this is to prevent stomach problems. Good luck, it is hard to get
in the swing of things, but I know you will do Great!!!!!

Please do not depend on Tums or Ultra Tums for your calcium. It is calcium
CARBONATE, which our pouches cannot process because we lack the necessary
stomach acid. You need to take calcium CITRATE. Twinlab makes a chewable
calcium citrate tablet available at your local GNC or Vitamin Shoppe.
There are also liquid calcium citrate products out there.

Regarding the adult liquid Tylenol, please be aware this product contains
sugar and may cause you to dump. There have been at least two people in my
support group at HUP that have dumped on the adult Liquid Tylenol.

I'm finally on a real routine with my vitamins, so I hardly ever forget,
though weekends throw me off. I take two 315mg Calcium Citrate + D, my
pre-natal, & a stool softener on my way to work every morning. I add a
1000mg sublingual B-12 on Mon, Wed, Fri mornings. Then I take 2 more
calciums at lunch and the last one on the way home. Can't absorb more than
500-600g of calcium at a time. I asked my nutritionist about taking
calcium at the same time as the others since some people say the calcium
blocks absorbtion of the multi, but she said it's fine. The B-12, we're
supposed to average 250mg/day, so that's why I only take them MWF. Need a
total of about 1500g calcium citrate each day. If you take a regular
multi-vitamin, you'll need to supplement the iron (that's why I take
pre-natal).

My doctor prescribes: 2 multis daily, a B-12 shot monthly (or sublinguals),
1500 mg Calcium CITRATE. I started taking 2500 mcg Biotin, a B vitamin
that's supposed to help with hair loss -- it's water soluable so you just
pee out the excess. I prefer B-12 shots so I have one less thing to think
about. Good luck.

My doctor suggested Flintstones Complete Chewable tablets 2 times a day.

Of course, you may want to talk to your surgeon about what vitamin regime
s/he wants you on. However, my regimine included Centrum Jr. chewables
twice a day and liquid b-12 sublingual. After the first 4 weeks, I started
my Vita4Life vitamin supplements which are specially designed for post-ops
including all of the required vitamins. Good luck.

I am pre-op but my surgeon and nutrionist gave me my list of what to take
and told me to start doing it now. The nutrionist tried to make it easy for
me - since all this is soo confusing! Take one calcium after breakfast and
one after lunch - I chose the Viactiv chews which are really good. Then
after dinner take the rest - two Flintstones childrens chewable
multivitamins, one chewable vitamin c, one iron pill, and B-12. I still
haven't gotten the b-12 yet, I am trying to find it in the liquid form. I
was confused on what to take with what and she said the iron cuts down on
the calcuim absorption as does the multivitamin since it contains iron too
so that's why she said to take my calcium separately. Hope this helps. Best
thing to do is talk to your doctors and have them explain what and when to
take things, they know what's best and I do think they all have their own
ideas.
