Question:
Will the vitamins I need send me to the poor house?
I realize I will have tons of money from the food I won't be eating but what kind of cost is associated with the vitamins I will have to take for life? Dr. Georgen also said I would have to take B12 once a week, under my tongue, after surgery. I'm pretty sure forever.<p>Just curious how much will be left to spend on clothes. LOL This is a serious question though. — zoedogcbr (posted on December 2, 2002)

I use Flintstones Complete, Caltrate 600, and Sublingual B12. These are
all the advise from my physicial and dietician. The flinstones are around
12 to 15 dollars, the caltrate about $9.00 and the sublinguals I got at GNC
for around 25.00, You only take the B12 once a week, so what I paid for
them will last a year. The Flintstones I take 2 a day and they last 2
months as with the caltrate one a day lasts 2 months. Hope this helps.

Taking vites the way I do, components, it runs around $40/month. That's
multi, iron (non-ferrous sulfate), C, 2000mg calc citrate, dry form A,D,E,
zinc & sublingual B12. That doesn't include protein supplement.

To the previous poster Mary - You do not want to be taking Caltrate - this
is calcium CARBONATE, which our bodies cannot process after an RNY because
we don't have near enough stomach acid. You need to be taking calcium
citrate and you need to educate your surgeon and nutritionist to instruct
the patients in the proper form of calcium to take post-RNY. The lady who
posted after you - Michelle Curran - can tell you about how little calcium
carbonate helps the post-RNY patient. So can her husband Both of them
suffer from osteoporosis after faithfully taking calcium carbonate for many
years because it was the *wrong* form of calcium...JR

Chris...
I guess I'm pretty lucky, My Dr. (with btc in OH) perscribes me a prenatal
vitamin to take... I have pretty good ins (anthem bc bs ppo) and I just
mail my perscript int (or do it via internet) and I get 3 mos supply for
only 5$. Does your dr. perscribe you vites? Do you have a perscript
program? You may want to see if your dr. can perscribe you vites if you do
it may help cut some costs... (My dr. perscribes prenate advanced... it has
a slight stool softner in it to keep you from getting constipated and it
works great for me... I am soooooo regular, just like clockwork). Anyways
the only supplement I take is calcium, which I get in tums... Shame on me I
don't take this like I should, but I am a big milk drinker and cheese eater
=)... (Oh yeah I am 19mos out)

Chris,
I take a chewable multivitamin, b12 shots (they make me feel better then
the pills under the tongue), and a calcium suppliment everyday. I buy the
calcium and multivitamin from Sams club and only spend about 15 dollars for
3 1/2 month supply. The B12 comes in a vial that lasts for 15 months with
the vial and needles I spent an another $8.50. I guess it really depends
on what your doctor wants you to take, but I'm spending pennies a day on my
supplaments. Rachel Wayt **Open Roux-en-y 9/25/02 -64 lbs

I had the same concern myself. I was told I would be on the B-12 for the
rest of my life as well. At my consult tho the doctor said my intake of
B-12 would depend on my blood work he does. So you may get away with B-12
supplements once a month. As far as vitamins he told me I could double my
intake of Flinstone vitamins and that should be enough if the blood work
all looks good. Looking at it from that point I knew I could afford the
cost of supplements. I think there should still be some left for clothes
;-) lol.
God Bless,
Lahoma

I use the generic brand from Dollar General they are a complete vitamin
and are $3.00. My surgeon said they have everything in them that I need.
She checks my labs every 3 months and so far so good!
