Question:
How do you do any barbeque dishes post-op?

Hi All, Going through my new crockpot cookbook (just got it at Sam's Club). Though I am still pre-op (7 more days!), I was trying to mark some simple yet family-friendly recipes to do for the family. We all enjoy bbq. How do you deal with the need for brown sugar in the recipes? What about plain old bbq sauce for chicken breast, etc? What about ketchup? No, I'm not planning on eating it right away (lol-no way would I chance that!), but I want to look down the road a bit. Thanks, Mary Ann    — Mary Ann B. (posted on November 23, 2002)

hi there. pre op i used to add brown sugar to bbq weenies or meatballs in the crock pot when id make them but post op i just use plain old store bought bbq sauce. i use this for chicken as well. i place frozen chicken in glass bowl and put bbq in and cook for about 30 minutes or more depending. the chicken is very tender and the bbq sauce is really good poured over some rice. i dont eat rice post op though. just try to find a bbq sauce with the least sugars and carbs as possible. i like to eat meats plain too, i sprinkle garlic powder on it and its good that way. best of luck to you :)

I use bottled BBQ sauce, too. I mean, how much am I gonna get on MY piece? If I want to make sauce from scratch, I use SugarLike brown. My g-ma used to make a great sauce, now that you reminded me.

although I doubt the tiny bit of sugar you'd get from bbq sauce is gonna hurt you much (especially if you aren't eating it daily), there are some awesome alternatives. Chicken marinated in italian dressing (I love Wishbone) is wonderful on the grill and low in sugar. Make a rub instead of sauce. You can find great recipes online - just go to www.google.com and put in barbeque rubs - most don't use sugar and are delish. I also use garlic, cajun seasonings, plain old salt and pepper, lemon pepper, etc. Be creative - you can certainly avoid most sugar if you are.

I have been exploring products that are sugar-free and I am a very picky person when it comes to "flavor", so please believe me when I tell you that I have found an excellent barbacue sauce that is very thick and tasty, yet sugar-free...never thought I'd ever find anything sugar free that would have a good flavor, but I have a store down the street that cater's to Atkins dieter's and they have lots of sugarfree products that are very good....the name of the barbacue sauce I buy is "Walden Farms". They have a Hickory Smoke flavor and they also have sugar free katsup as well as sugar free chocolate syrup for protein drinks, etc...you can probably find them online, or you can go to "greenbeenz.com"...I realize that everyone's tastes are different, but just buy one bottle and try it for yourself...my husband doesn't diet and he love's it too....These products are also carb free and fat free...

I have little or no problem with what little bbq we can eat. I have done well with chopped bbq beef or pork sandwiches where initially I just ate some of the meat out and no bread. Now at 17 months post-op I might eat half of the bread. I think the grilled meats are more dense and more difficult for us to eat post-op, therefore meats stewed or served with a sauce work best for me. Good Luck!

I have a wonderful recipe for BBQ sauce, but I'm at work and can't get to it right now. It is in my recipe book (if you click on my profile (Lynette B.), it will take you to my page and there's a link for my website with the recipe book on it. You can email me for this recipe if you aren't interested in the whole book and I'd be happy to email it to you.

Sam's Club sells a Jim Beam BBQ Sauce, it has less than 2 grams of sugar per serving, and it's very yummy. I personally have no problem with plain ole Heinz ketchup, but I probably only use about 2 tablespoons at a time if that. Sugar Twin does make brown sugar, I have it, but haven't tried it yet. Good Luck
