Question:
Yet another calorie question: How many at 3 1/2 weeks out? Should I care?
I am 3 1/2 weeks out lap RNY, down 20 pounds, which I think is terrific. I am averaging about 550 -650 calories a day, 75 g. of protein. I am getting plenty of water. Yesterday, however, I had 800 calories (with 88 g. of protein). My surgeon did not give me a calorie guide, and I'm concerned I'm eating too much. I've read some past questions in the library that seemed to indicate I didn't have to worry about calories at this stage -- is this right? Does anyone have a guide for caloric intake as we progress? Thanks to all. — Tamara K. (posted on November 15, 2002)

At BTC they emphasize not counting calories because this surgery is
supposed to be a life style change not a diet. However, the dietician did
tell me that for the first six weeks we will be eating between 600 and 800
calories a day. After six weeks, you are supposed to eat no less than
900-1100 calories a day. I hope this helps!

I wouldn't be so worried about calories. Focus on eating the right
kinds of foods and getting all your protien in. As long as you
do that and avoid the foods that are calorie dense, starches and greasy
foods, you should do fine. I am 8 months post op RNY open and down 132 lbs
and have never once worried about calories. Some days I eat more
than other days, because some days I seem to get full much
quicker than other days. But learn to stop when you are full
and avoid bad food choices and you will be doing great.
Good luck.
