Question:
I am lactose intolerant now, what will happen after?
The nutritionist said to be sure to tell the doc I am lactose intolerant and said how hard it would be if I got gas with the new stoma. Now, I am worried. I get gas alllll the time and eat altot of cheese, yogurt, etc. Anyone have any suggestions or experience with this? thanks. — deespol (posted on October 18, 2002)

When you use milk, use Lactaid or avoid milk. My surgeon says that
cheeses and yogurt don't bother people with lactose intolerance because the
cultures take care of it. Also, he recommends a product called Omnigest EZ
if you have gas problems. You can get it at Wal Mart, it is an all natural
product and you should use it for 30 days to get the best results. He has
never said anything about gas harming the stoma.

I haven't had milk or ice cream for 8 yrs. No loss. Except weight. Haha.
I do cheese, cottage cheese, cream cheese, sour cream--those are fine.
Yogurt's i\high in sugar, so I do only the "light" and only
rarely. Milk has very little nutritonal value for an adult WITH a full
digestive system. For us, it's more like candy, so really, you will be fine
without it. 80% of white dults are lactosse intolerant by age 40, of
non-cauc, by age 18. Clearly, a substance that is optional.
