Question:
Just had surgery Oct 8th and I can't stand ANY of the food I can eat!
My problem is now that I can't stand anything i'm putting in my mouth. It all tastes horrible!! Yuk. I've tried malt-o-meal, cream soups, protein from Vitalady, all is so gross I can't drink it. I'm sitting here right now trying to get some cream of chicken soup down. Yesterday it didn't seem to taste so bad. I'm in real trouble here!! All i want to do is drink water or Peach green tea. Help!!!Thanks for all your help..... — Sharon B. (posted on October 11, 2002)

Sharon, I had the Duodenal Switch on July 24th 2002 and I was in the same
boat as you. Nothing sounded or tasted good and if I found something
appealing then the next time I ate it it was so gross. I couldnt eat eggs
for 6 weeks because my first meal was scrambled eggs and mashed potatoes.
Now i can eat anything and everything. I crave things alot and I eat
whatever sounds good and it ends up tasting good. I have pizza, steak,
shrimp, pasta, everything. I am only 3 months post op and have been eating
well since about 1 month out so i think your pallete will change soon. I
know it sucks but hang in there you are doing great and good luck.

Ihad surgery on Oct 8th also (LAP-RNY). I am only allowed clear liquids.
Gatorade, jello, sugar free popsicles, clear broth... I wish I could have
some other soups, etc. Thurs the 17th I go to surgeons office and go to the
next step - mashed potatoes, yogurt etc. I am sure in time we will be able
to enjoy food. Stay with it!!

I was told that liquids or just water for the first week or two was fine -
and protein not really important during this time. Allow time for your
body to heal - be especialy careful the first six weeks food wise.

At 10 days post-op I was fed up with my eating options and went back to
eating whatever I wanted. My doctor told me to skip any food stage I
wanted - it's all trial and error - and gave me the green light for
"normal" eating. I felt great and ended up back to work full
time after four weeks full of energy. I think in my five and a half months
post-op, I've MAYBE had 10 protein drinks. I absolutely hate them. Good
luck with your eating! It's hard at first, but worth it in the end! Open

Sharon, you only has surgery like 4 days ago....Please, take it easy....The
most important thing right now is LIQUID! Don't let youself get
dehydrated...Drink, Drink and Drink some more. You have enough excessive
for your body to feed upon. Follow your dtrs instructions, check your
tongue regularly (if it becomes white, you maybe dehydrated)....Good Luck,
relax and drink! yOU'LL DO FINE!

Try Knorr vegetable soup. Strain the vegies and the broth tastes great. It
is light and not too heavy. If you only drink a few tablespoons, so what.
You are post-op and doing your some major healing. Every week gets better.

I was in the hospital for 2.5 days, at four days post-op I could only do
broth, jello, water with lemon, green tea (decaf), popsicles (SF). I didn't
start on soups and egss until two weeks out. Now, at 8 weeks, I am eating
regularly, two to three meals, protein, veggies, small amounts of fruit. I
have a shake (HMR is the best I have found- works with water and tastes
like chocolate pudding) for breakfast, a regular lunch and dinner. However,
the portions are extremely small. This morning for breakfast I had one egg
scrambled (with some ketchup), half a piece of bacon and half a piece of
toast. That will fill me until dinner. I do drink a lot of fluids-
gatorade, crystal light, water, ice tea (decaf), decaf coffee, and I use
splenda as a sweetner. For dinner last night I had baked chicken thigh, 1/4
mashed potato w/gravy and two bites of steamed carrots. I fill up quickly
and feel very satisfyed. Don't push the real food thing. Take it slowly
these first couple of weeks. Your body is healing from the inside out and
needs some TLC. Also, you are probably in ketosis whichis making your mouth
taste weird. I brushed my teeth a lot during this period. Try to be
patient. I know this is easiet said than done, but time is truly on your
side! Imagine that a year from now you will be a mere shadow of your former
self!

6 months out and still have that problem a lot. I was a big meat eater and
now I can't stand to put meat in my mouth because it makes me gag. I think
you just have to try different things and find things you can handle.
Remember that you need a lot of liquids. I am down 163 pounds and feeling
great. Keep your head up.

Try Carnation Instant Breakfast with milk. You can add unflavored protein
mix and it makes it a little thicker but you cant taste it at all. My dr
said if you get anything down - make sure it your protein. You will get
about 30 grams with 8 oz of milk this way.

Sharon, I too, had surgery on 10-08. I am just eating because I know I
have to. It's hard, but I try to get a few bites down several times a day
and sip water as much as possible. Sure do miss those rabbit pellet ice
cubes (as I call them) from the hosptial. Since coming home I've had
chicken noodle soup, mostly just the soup, but a few of the noodles,
instant mashed potatos, a sugar free fudgesicle and sugar free vanilla
pudding. The pudding is great as was the fudgesicle. My doctor told me I
could needed to puree everything I eat and could eat anything (without
sugar) just as long as it's pureed, even suggested Campbell's Chunky Soup.
I'm going to try that next. Hang in there!

I had surgery on Oct 4 and I had to same problem. Are you also having pain
in your shoulders? If you do or don't try taking GasX. I found that the
horrible taste in my mouth and pain in my upper chest and shoulders was
gas!!!! I had relief in about 6 hours from both of these symptoms!!! I
take one GasX after eating and after having a protein shake/carnation
instant breakfast. I hope this helps!!!

The first few weeks I had trouble getting things in too. What saved me was
egg drop soup from a Chinese restaurant. I ate that a few times a day
early on. Only thing I could stomach for a while.

I really don't know because I haven't had the surgery yet, but what about
chicken broth or beef broth. Homemade would probably be best since you can
monitor the amount of actual salt and sugar that may or may not go into it.
Just a thought on my part.

This is the worst part of the surgery...the liquid post-op diet. I did not
like a single thing I could have, tried it all. All I can say is hang in
there, I love all the old foods now (10months post-op) and I love losing
weight eating them!!
