Question:
Anyone have any idea of how many calories per day I should be able to
consume at 5 months postop? My surgeon and dietician are pretty vague, and I know there has to be some good solid advice from the folks here. Thanks in advance. — Getting H. (posted on October 9, 2002)

I'm 4.5 months out and I try to get in 800-1000 a day. I don't have
dietician, but from what I read on here before that is the most consistant
answer I have seen for this time post-op. And it works for me. When I drop
below that I usually stand still in my weight lose.

I am 7 months post-op and don't even concern myself with calories.
I focus on getting in protien, no refine sugars and try to minimize
starches.
I eat till I am satisfied, which is amazingly little compared
to what I used to eat and never felt full. I start off every morning
with a high protien shake (Carb solutions mixed with milk).
Providing 25-30 gms of protien. Eat 2-3 major meals and 2-3 snacks.
Again trying to focus on protien and staying completely away from refined
sugars
and minimizing starches. Some days I am more hungary and eat more
than other days, but basically have learned to listen to my appetite (which
is small)
I think some people over obsess with counting calories and I have seen
people in
support group that still think they have to "starve and suffer"
but don't do as
well, end up making poor food choices and loose weight slower.
But what I am doing must be working because I have lost 124 lbs in about 7
months.
And continue pretty steadily loosing 3 lbs a week without having any
plateaus.
Still have about a 100 to go but feel great, and for once in my life, don't
feel
like I am starving to death. Even when I used to binge eat, I never felt
satisfied
or full. My wife says that now she can tell when I am full because I get a
funny
look on my face. Good luck, and don't obsess about the calories.
