Question:
Need Post-op protein suggestions for a vegetarian

I am a pre-op with a surgery date of 10/23. I am nearly a vegetarian - eat very little meat, no eggs, eat cheese. I am concerned about getting protein in. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks for all the great help on this site!    — Laura B. (posted on October 7, 2002)

Hi Linda. I am no vegetarian, but I'll do the best I can here. Tofu, beans/lentils, cheese, peanut butter come to mind. However, my guess is you will need to "supplement" your diet even more so than a carnivore. Hopefully, you can find some protein drinks you like. Good luck, Kevin

Soy protein! Get some soy protein powder and put it in smoothies. Also, buy soy-based "fake meats" like Boca, Morningstar, Dixie Diner, etc. I struggle with the same problems.

Try Real Meals it has the full 60 grams in one shake plus over 40 other vitamins and nutrients. And it tastes really good. Check it out at www.protein-solution.com

Someone below mentioned getting 60 g. protein at one time. About 30 g. of that is being wasted as our bodies do not absorb more than that at one time. Spread it out!

You will do fine. I eat very little meat, and most post ops don't eat meat for months and months. I eat few eggs, but am a big cheese eater. Get yourself a copy of a good vegetarian book, Jane Brodie's is a great one, (I used back in my health food days 20 years ago). Tells how to mix and match foods that create better protein by combining certain foods together. There are many supplements out them to use in the begining and yes you want 55-60 gr a day. But your goal will be to move to "Food First", supplements after food for your long term diet. Look for a protien supplement with as few ingredients as posible with low sugar, low fat and low carbs. They are available. The reason for using Carnation Instant Breakfast is not for the protein, it is for the complete mixture of vitamins and minerals. It is a standard for the elderly. Ensure also now has a diabetic version but stay away from things like SlimFast. Betsy
