Question:
Will I like foods post-op that I don't like pre-op?
I've heard from a bunch of people that my tastes will change post-op, and that I won't be able to stand foods that I enjoy now. My question is the reverse: has anyone found that they enjoy foods post-op that they didn't like pre-op? I'd love to like seafood -- it has such enormous health benefits -- but I HATE it. HATE it all. Thanks! — Tamara K. (posted on September 18, 2002)

I would say no. If you don't like something now, why would you later? You
will probally find some things you like now you won't be able to tolerate
later. I've always loved mayo and tarter sauce. Especially the tarter. But
they make me quezy now so it almost is'nt worth it even in small amounts.
But all my dislikes (which are few) I still dislike.

I have found that my tastes changed somewhat. Not totally, but some. Things
I like now that I didn't: diluted fruit juice, pretzels, soups, salads
without dressing, milk (not a lot but I used to HATE it--I now prefer
skim), bananas, walnuts. Things I don't like now that I did: Gooey
desserts, most chocolate, fried foods, spicy foods, soft drinks, tuna salad
:(, mayonnaise, salad dressing. I didn't have a major shift in things I can
or will eat, but I did have one in my PREFERENCES. I CAN eat a burger but I
would PREFER something else.

Tamara,
I used to hate eating fruits, it just wasn't me , no that I'm post op here
I am eating dried prunes, go figure. How-ever in the same return, I used to
love hot and spicey food, Mexican and Thai food, now I cannot tollerate
them at all, since we not allowed to drink while eating, ( and these foods
tend to be overly spicey ) (HOT), I tend to stay away from them, best of
luck to you,

I have recently started eating real foods and my tast changes from hour to
hour. I think it will be a few months before that gets better, but I have
always loved seafood and yesterday I was looking forward to the cold shrimp
I brought for lunch, Uhhg! One bite and it was disgusting! I was so sad!
But on the other hand (I don't give up) I made it for supper marinated on
the grill and it was fantastic! The point is, you get very creative in how
you cook. I was never a fan of salmon, but I found some recipes for
blackened salmon and I am going to try it this weekend, it just sounds so
good. I went into this thinking that I would do this, this and this. But,
I learned you can only do what your new little pouch allows you to do. But
that's okay too. I is just so much FUN to watch the dial on the scale go
down, and you learn to do what is best for you. Good luck!

I've found that I like things now, that I didn't like before. Right now I
seem to like anything that is not sweet--which I craved before surgey...
good luck

I use to HATE chili, and wasn't a big tomatoe fan. Now I LOVE them both,
and make big batches of chili for myself and my family, which makes the dh
happy since he's always liked it. I like salads now too.

salads loaded with vegees
fish
Lean Cuisines (they always used to be too small for my tastes!)
iced tea
sugar-free stuff
Splenda

I have seen where some post-ops tastes haven't changed much, but mine has
been quite dramatic. I still love a good filet mignon, but instead of a b.
potato on the side, I prefer steamed vegetables. Pre-op I wanted the baked
potato with loads of butter and sour cream. I loved bread pre-op, but now
its a take it or leave it attitude, so I leave it. Sometimes I will have a
couple of bites though. Instead of the rich desserts and sweets after a
meal, I go for fruit instead. NEVER ate any fruit as a pre-op, unless it
was something like blueberry cobbler, or strawberry cheesecake! I cannot
tolerate any fried foods, just looking at it now turns my stomach. Pre-op I
craved fried foods. I have a hard time going through the McD's drive-thru
to get a salad, the smell that comes out of the window is horrible now to
me, before I loved it, made my mouth water for those fries! Just looking
into my fridge, you can tell that my tastes have changed. Everything in
there looks like it is good for you. I sure do feel so much better making
healthier choices. My taste change has been

Sorry didn't finish...My taste change looks as if everything is quite the
opposite of what it used to be.

I have found my tastes completely changed. I never ate baked foods, only
fried. Now I only eat baked. I eat alot of salads now, and fresh fruit, and
before surgery I never ate fresh fruits. Fresh vegs I can not get enough of
now. I was a diet coke-a-holic before surgery, now I can not stand the
stuff. I only drink water of Sugar-free tea, mostly water. Hope this helps.

My tastes have completely changed in both directions. It's fun I a trying
everything again now to see if I like it. I hate pizza which was one of my
favorites pre-op and I love salads which I hated pre-op.

I never ate onions or tomatoes. Now I love them, the onions moreso than
the tomatoes. I prefer seafood over any other meat. I was a big sweet
eater preop. Dumping prevents it post-op.

I thank God that my taste buds have changed! LOL I only used to eat
carbohydrates and sugar. Now i mainly eat meats, dairy and veggies! It is
so weird! I always ate chicken, but i actually eat beef and fish now. I
never would've thought i'd eat broccoli and ENJOYED it! I'm very happy it
worked out this way, now i can eat much healthier, and feel better, too! :)

Funny you mention seafood, I hated it pre op but now as a post op I love
popcorn shrimp, and I can eat fish, clams and such. EGGS is another thing I
hated pre op but now I have eggs at least 4 days a week. Sometimes I crave
them...Crazy!
And WATER, I hated water, wouldn't touch it, I only drank tea or Dr Pepper,
now I ONLY drink water.
