Question:
Is it okay to eat soups post-op as a meal? I heard it wasn't!
Sometimes I'll just have some soup for a meal or eat a few bites of a cup of soup & maybe some salad or what ever. Is it okay to eat a little soup with something else or as a meal itself? I heard it wasn't because it's kind of like the water thing. Don't drink water before & after eating. Is this the same thing with soup? Just wondering? — Allison T. (posted on August 27, 2002)

Blended soups right after surgery are probably a good way to get some
nutrition. However, they are liquid and liquids pass through the stoma
quickly. The liquids may also push foods out of the pouch and thus, you'll
feel hungry more quickly. Therefore, it's a good idea to avoid them. My
nutritionist said to avoid them. But now, six months out, occassionally, I
eat a little chunky soup for lunch, I fortify it with more meat (so that
it's like a thick stew) and add some salad and some fruit. For me, anyway,
it makes a filling meal.

During liquids/pureed stage, it's ok while you're healing. After that,
they fall into the NO CALORIE CONTAINING BEVERAGES category.

I don't know about anyone else, but I enjoy soup.
