Question:
Am I missing something?

I've been reading where people are substituting No-Sugar Added Carnation Instant Breakfast for protein shakes. The nutrition information on the back of the envelope says it's got 4 g of protein. Mixing it with 1 cup of milk adds 8 g, resulting in a total of 12 grams of protein, most of which comes from milk. Protein shakes (the ones I make, anyway) have at least twice that much protein. I'm all in favor of CIB; I drink it as a snack, but I'm concerned that some people (and apparently, even some surgeons!) consider it a better source of protein than it is. Adding it to milk does provide SOME vitamins and SOME protein, but in my non-professional opinion, it's a side dish, not the main course.    — Roxanne M. (posted on August 19, 2002)

My surgeon is one of the ones asking his patients to drink CIB no sugar added post-op. Its not just CIB though, he wants us to mix it with skim milk and 1/2 cup of eggbeaters for added protein (eggbeaters has 6g of protein per 1/4 cup). Maybe specifically lists CIB because it tastes better than most of the other protein drinks/shakes out there and we'll be more compliant that way, not sure. Good luck to you.

hiya my surgeon put me on cib 2 weeks post op because i couldn't keep any protein mix down. i also thought, "gee this doesn't have very much protein!!" but then i started having probs with it cuz of the milk - not being able to digest it well so i cut it out all together and tried to just get protein from food. however, i've since discovered Vitamite, a milk substitute and that digests no problem and i would recommend it for anyone having to take cib but having probs digesting the milk. i also found Jarrow's Iso Rich Soy Protein Powder which is flavorless, 25g protein for 2 tbls, no fat, no sugar, no carbs and can be cooked with. i cannot go a day without it. kate open rny 6-14-01 pre op: 268lbs goal weight: 135lbs current weight: 130lbs
