Question:
What is the difference between procedures? Panni VS> Abdominoplasty
My plastic surgeon said there is no difference between the two...should I be worried? — JENN *. (posted on July 12, 2002)

I had a panniculectomy in November. My plastic surgeon stated that a
panniculectomy removes excess skin and fat, but does not involve any
surgery on the underlying muscles. An abdominoplasty also removes excess
skin and fat, but tightens underlying abdominal muscles and involves repair
of existing hernias if necessary. The procedures have different insurance
codes, and most plastic surgeons charge more for an abdominoplasty because
of the increased work involved. My surgeon asked the insurance to approve
an abdominoplasty, but stated that he would only do a panniculectomy if the
abdominal muscles were in good shape. I am assuming that my insurance
providers were happy that they had to pay the lesser amount for the
panniculectomy :-)
Good luck!
