Question:
Why is it that I cannot seem to quit drinking with meals?????? Suggestions?

This is my biggest downfall. I am a little over 2 mos post-op RNY & still drink with my meals. I cannot seem to break the habbit. I am so afraid of streching my pouch. I also seem to get fuller quicker (obviously) which is not good because I'm hungry later on. Any suggestions on how to stop this old habbit of mine? Why is this so hard for me? I'm not a very good drinker to begin with through out the day. I have a hard time getting my liquids in. The only time I really seem to drink is durning a meal! Am I messed up or what??...LOL Any suggestions would be appreciated.    — Allison T. (posted on June 15, 2002)

I have the same probelm. I can't seem to stop. The only way I'm able to not drink with meals is to not have one. So when I sit down I put my food in front of me with nothing to drink. When I finish eating I time 30 minutes. I don't get up to get anything to drink till that 30 minutes is up. I know that seems kind of hard. Good luck. You are not alone at all.

Hon, I have the same problem but I just dont stress over it anymore. I sip during meals to cure the crave of it and then wait the required time to drink more water. you will be fine im sure just try to wing yourself off of it, till you are happy with what you take in during ur meal. good luck

I am 5 weeks post op. Prior to surgery i have always had alot to drink while eating. Since surgery i don't even keep my fluids near me while i am eating. They are usually across the room, i find it helpful if they aren't in arms reach. It is hard sometimes but i am still eating about 1oz at a time. I bought a watch to watch my times so i only drink when i am supposed to. Sometimes when i am at home i just use the oven timer. Hope this helps :)

I'm over a year post op and still drink with meals. I tried not to, but then I could'nt seem to drink enough later and felt dehydrated. Now I try to drink as small amount as I comfortabley can. To the best of my knowledge I'm not hurting anything and I'm still losing weight. So I don't think it always hurts things. But that is only my opinion.

I have the same problem, too. I am 6 months post op, I've lost 106 pounds, and I still drink with my meals. My protien levels are good so I'm not going to worry about it anymore.

Hi there! I find that if I am well hydrated throughout the day, I barely notice that I haven't had anything to drink while I am eating. I even wait for one hour after eating to start drinking, and I have no problem doing that, again because I make sure I am well hydrated. On the occasion that I haven't drank enough, I postpone my eating until I have had more water. Good luck to you!!
