Question:
Problems in the 4th week. Can't eat!!
I am having issues with eating and have since the 3rd week. I can't eat even soft foods at times and liquids are sometimes a problem. I was hospitalized this past weekend for dehydration and they have ruled out any obstructions with my procedure and have put me on an anti-nausea medicine. I was just looking for some advice if anyone else has had any problems with this, because it seems like people are getting back to eating at this point or at least more normal foods than a liquid/soft food diet. Thanks... — Lisa V. (posted on June 3, 2002)

I am in my 6th week and having the same problem. It has got worse since my
3rd week. I get sick just thinking about food. Not sure what the problem
is but everyone says it will get better.

I am on week 8 tomorrow and I hit a rough road about week 6 - week 7 - I
couldn't keep anything down either. Nothing. Zipola. Nada except for
liquids and everyone kept saying to call the doctor but from talking with
others, I knew that it was something that has happened to others and if
there are not problems, it will pass. On the 7th day of no-eating, I was
finally able to keep things down. I recommend eating extremely, extremely
slow. Chew your food up even farther than you thought you should be. Walk
a few steps if you can during your first meal your trying to keep down - it
helped me for some reason. No water or liquids - just chew like crazy and
take'er slow. Whole new way of life, huh? Can make me a nut-case some
times. :) Good luck to you.

Everybody says that life is just great, but I had serious eating problems
for about 6-7 months! My kids were concerned that I would leave the table,
but eventually got used to it, "Oh, Mom's just gone to barf". At
4 weeks, I could only choke down Gatorade (demon drink), Swiss Miss No
Sugar Added Cocoa, and hot tea... I am now 3 years + post op and trust me,
I eat just fine and then some!!

I also had problems beginning at 3 weeks post op and they lasted over one
week and then I had a good week and now I am throwing up again. I can't
seem to eat bread and now I am having problems with chicken--just too dry
no matter how much I chew. It seems like lots of folks have this problem
so I am just going to ride it through and hope it does get better. Take
small bites, sometimes we forget that because we are hungry. Good Luck

I had this problem at three weeks out. But I realize now I ate too fast
and sometimes swollowed before things were fully chewed. They told me that
if this happens go back to full liquids and then slowly add in soft foods
again. Tuna works well for me .... and fish is my saving grace.
Good luck,

I'm at week 4, too, and the thought of eating anything turns me off. Doc
says I need to eat more, but everything seems to make me feel ... not sure
how... not necessarily nauseous but just not good. It's the whole
digestive process that I always took for granted. Now it's so obvious to
me and it takes away from the pleasure of eating. I guess I need to keep
telling myself that eating is not supposed to be entertainment... it's to
live. Even with that, I have no desire to make the effort to fix anything
because I know it will make me feel bad. What's the point. I know this
will pass, but it's no fun! Will I ever enjoy eating again? I'm eating
the right stuff, it's just a drag. (whine whine whine!) (But I've lost 30
pounds... That's good! Got to keep my eye on the prize!)

I am having the same problem and I am 3 weeks post-op. It seems like every
other day I feel nauseated like and just have to force myself to eat. Few
days ago I went back to liquids again, and that seems to help some. When I
ran across this question it sure made me feel better! Thanks to all!

WOW, Am I glad to see that others are going through this too. I am 5 weeks
post op and last week, week 4 was the worst. I am having a hard time
eating. The first swallow is the worst, even with water. I know I have to
go slow, and I do. Walking helps keep things down abit. I have had to go
back to soft foods. Moist chicken one day will be ok, next will throw up.
I used to love milk now I can't stand the sight of it, but ice cream is ok
in real small quantity. I am having trouble even with a pouched egg.
looking forward for all this to pass.

The only time I've had problems with nausea is when I didn't take my
previcad and my tums first thing in the morning and I got sick. I'm one
week out and my doctor has me eating 2 oucnes of chicken noodle soup 3
times a day but I also eat one ounce of non-fat cottage cheese a day. So
one of my meals is one ounce of soup and one ounce of cottage cheese. You
might have to go back to the beginning and start all over again. Good luck
and God Bless. Keep in touch.
