Question:
is it ok to have a glass of wine or two?
I've heard yes and I've heard no. I know I shouldn't because it's empty calories, has sugar and that a small amount of alcohol will have a big effect, but is there any medical reason not to? I don't want to do any damage. — jerzeygirl71 (posted on June 1, 2002)

I must addmit. I drink a glass of wine every now and then. I am 9 1/2 mo
post-opp. I have lost 112 pounds. I has never hurt me. I think the key to
any thing is moderation. Yes, be careful it takes very little to make you
feel the effects. Sorry I don't have any medical facts. Just experience.

i heard it is ok. ofcourse besides it is empty calories, but medically, it
really shouldn't hurt you. My surgeon and head RN both told me this is
okay. The RN had a gastric bypass and occassionally has some wine with
dinner when she is out, so you don't have to deprive yourself! I wouldn't
do more than one glass though, because i think one glass can make us quite
drunk! :)

Besides the empty calories, the post-op instructions that I got from my
surgeon said <i>"After gastric bypass surgery, alcohol can be
dangerous. It is absorbed much more quickly after surgery and will reach
much higher levels in the blood, which flows into the liver. You will
experience a greater degree of intoxication on very little alcohol because
of rapid absorption. The simple rule is" never more than 2 drinks in a
24 hr period- and only on special occasions.</i> Hope that helps.
