Question:
Are frozen dinners okay to eat post-op?
I am only cooking for myself & want to eat frozen dinners because they are fast & small. Things like Weight Watchers, Healthy Choice etc. Are these things okay to eat? Also, any suggestions on things I can eat on the go that I can either take with me or get on the way? It seems that I'm always moving. Thanks! — Allison T. (posted on May 28, 2002)

I eat Smart ones and Healthy choice dinners. Do be aware of the sugar
content in some of them. I find I must be pretty careful of those with lots
of rice without some kind of sauce/gravy etc. For things on the go, try:
beef jerky, peanut butter/cheese crackers, protein bars. Hope this helps.

I am almost 15 months post-op and have eaten Lean Cuisine dinners since
about month 6. I try to eat 3 or less per week, due to the sodium.
(Prefer non-preserved foods) But it's really helped me keep my calories
down, and it's SOOO easy to fill up on one of those things, even 15 months
post-op.

I've been eating Lean Cuisine, Healthy Choice and Smart Ones since month 3.
I try to get ones with high protein, and sugar under 8 grams. Concentrate
on the protein first, then the veggie and just a bite or two of the carb
part. I've actually made the large bag of the Lean Cuisine skillet
dinners, added more chicken and taken that for lunch at work all week!

What you need to do is just get in the habit of reading the labels, no
matter what it is. If it is low in sugar and fat, high in protien, then it
should be ok. However watch them carefully, because a lot of
"diet" and "low fat" frozen dinners can be very high in
sugar and carbohydrates. I love the mexican frozen dinners. Some are
extremely high in fat, but others aren't bad. I usually don't eat the
spanish rice that come in them so I am not getting as many carbs as on the
label. But the main thing is to just use common sense. Good luck.
