Question:
When will these irritating problems go away?

I had open RNY surgery 1/17. I've lost just about 75 lbs. so far. I'm very happy with that and the fact that I can't make a hog of myself anymore. I feel very in control over food and never, ever thought the day would come. These are my questions... When will food stop getting stuck in my throat? Does anyone who loved fast food prior to surgery get sick just smelling it now? McDonald's is the worst. It's like pure grease on a bun to me anymore.    — Janice P. (posted on May 8, 2002)

Congrats on your weight loss! In the past 7 weeks, I too have had food get stuck in my throat. For me it was a stricture. I had one endoscopy 3 weeks ago and am having another one tomorrow. Its a quick simple procedure to widen your narrowing opening and allow food to pass. Talk to your surgeon, perhaps you need to be evaluated.

I right there with you with the McDonalds aversion. I think of one big grease pit. I tried eating 1/4 of my old fav, q-pdr, it was so nasty, I couldn't believe that I used to enjoy that grease burger. If we ever go there with the kids I now get one of their shaker salads. The ceasar is just yummy and I can't eat the whole thing. I have found different things at the fast stops than what I once thought was good. I feel so much better making better choices. I hope your problem with food getting stuck resolves soon. I had 2 strictures myself and it is not comfortable.

If you are having food getting stuck...you need to ask yourself...is this something that happens to me all the time, does it only happen when I eat certain foods, at a certain time of day and why only then. If it is all the time, then definetely it may be a stricture. For me it was only happening, if I ate too fast...didn't chew correctly or if I was trying to mix things that I was eating. I have found that food stays down best if I eat meats alone and then maybe later I will have something else. and I do mean very small bites...what I thought were small bites weren't small enough...I am talking bites the size of a pencil eraser. I hope these ideas help. I am 11 weeks post op now and the number of times my food gets stuck is slowly deminishing.

I can agree with the grease being just gross. I have had no desire for McDonalds at 9 weeks out. Anything greasy just makes me feel blah and I don't even want it anymore. If things are getting caught in your throat, are you chewing enough? Great job and Good Luck.
